SP Otto Link Tenor Mouthpiece

August 14, 2009 by Steve 3 Comments

This is another SP otto link that Brian Powell refaced and brought the beak down on.  I love these mouthpieces.  They are not too dark, not too bright but can really blow when you lay into them.  This is a .110 and is a little darker than the .107 Otto Link I had.  I saw this one on ebay and made a low bid for a bit less than what I thought it was worth and won it to my surprise.

I have one of Brian’s new Bergonzi resin pieces on order.  I’ve loved everything I’ve gotten from Brian Powell so I thought I’d give that a shot too.  This clip is a bit quiet because my family is sleeping and I couldn’t wail on it but it’s a cool little diddy using some approach notes and blues scale type ideas.

I have no idea. I asked back when I tried this one and no one knew. Maybe………”Special”?

I don’t know what SP stands for but I do know that model used to also be labeled ‘V’ and ‘PT’. I have been lead to believe that PT refers to Paul ‘Doc’ Tenney and ‘V’ for vintage. The reference to Doc Tenney is that I have been told that this is the same blank as what he uses for his Tenney Slant mouthpiece. I use one of these as my main tenor mouthpiece.
