Mouthpiece Cafe House Blend II Tenor Saxophone Mouthpiece Review

January 12, 2017 by Steve 3 Comments

Today, I am reviewing another saxophone mouthpiece made by Brian Powell and Erik Greiffenhagen over at Mouthpiece Cafe.  If you have visited my site before you probably know that I hold Brian and Erik in pretty high regard.  They have both done tons of sax mouthpiece refacing jobs for me over the years with great results.  I have reviewed and tried many examples of their mouthpieces over the years and they are always top notch.

Actually, when I am on Ebay looking for my next sax mouthpiece purchase, I always perk up when I see a Florida Link mouthpiece that was refaced by Brian Powell or Erik Greiffenhagen.   Many players are looking for original Florida Otto Links but after playing a few that I ended up having to have refaced myself, I now would rather just buy one that has already been checked over, optimized and plays great right out of the box………my point being, that I trust the work that these two guys do.

Mouthpiece Cafe House Blend II Tenor Saxophone Mouthpiece

This Mouthpiece Cafe House Blend II was sent to me by an adult Skype student that asked me if I wanted to try it out.  He sent me this House Blend II as well as a beautiful Rafael Navarro Silver Bebop Special that I hope to review soon also.

The House Blend II is a 7 tip opening which is a little small for me as I usually play a 7*-8 but this mouthpiece didn’t feel small at all for me. Actually, it feels like I am playing a 7*.   I actually wondered if maybe they forgot to put the star on the 7.  I ended up making two clips of this one. One with a Rigotti Gold 3 medium reed and the other with a Rigotti Gold 3 1/2 medium reed.

Usually if I am trying a mouthpiece out and more than one size reed works great on it then I will do a sound clip of each just to hear what they sound like and see which reed I like better.   It’s interesting because sometimes the reed I like playing more isn’t the one I like the sound clip of the best.

The House Blend II tenor mouthpiece looks great as I would expect from Brian and Erik’s work. This is a used mouthpiece so you can see some marks on the table from use.  The tip, table, rails and baffle look smooth and even.  The inside side rails are scooped out as they lead into the chamber.  The baffle looks pretty high to my eyes. The baffle heads aways from the tip at an angle and then the curve increases as it heads down into the chamber at a steeper pitch.  I would say the House Blend II has a large chamber similar in size to a hard rubber Otto Link.

Here’s a description of the House Blend model tenor saxophone mouthpiece from the Mouthpiece Cafe website:

This unique mouthpiece was modeled after Erik’s own hand-made creation. It is unlike any other on the market and is exclusively made by Mouthpiece Cafe. It features a large chamber with a longer baffle and we think the tone will absolutely blow your mind.

The House Blend is designed to have the perfect balance of brightness and edge while maintaining the rich, full body sound you desire. This piece is extremely versatile and is great for most venues including jazz, R&B,Blues and even Rock.  This is a player’s mouthpiece for sure!

HB vs HB2

HB-the design concept for the original House Blend was to make a mouthpiece that had the basic tonal characteristics of a Slant Signature Link but with more power and dynamic range. Easily played ppp to fff, lush subtone or full bore. Sort of like a Link on steroids.

The HB2 has an even longer more aggressive baffle than the original HB, that combines the best combination of a shelf style mouthpiece and a long roll over baffle. Still easily controllable and able to be played with a wide dynamic flexibility.

We are currently offer this in the following tip openings: 6*(.095), 7*(.105), 8(.110)

I have attached two sound clip demonstrations of the House Blend II.  One is with a Rigotti Gold 3 Medium reed and then for kicks I added one with a harder reed, a Rigotti Gold 3 1/2 Medium reed. Both reeds played great with the House Blend II mouthpiece.

For me, the House Blend is truly a blend between a classic Otto Link type sound and a high baffle mouthpiece.  It’s one of those mouthpieces that straddles the line right in the middle.  Great for straight ahead playing but can get more kick and power for other genres of music when needed.

It was great for subtoning (I love the subtone at 1:32 of the 3 medium clip).  I also got almost a classical vibe to it (at 2:00 of the 3 medium clip where I go into my version of an improvised classical tune……..a little corny but I think it sounds good.)

The Rigotti Gold 3 1/2 Medium clip wasn’t as spread but I thought the tone sounded a bit more substantial and thick.  It sounded a bit darker in my opinion.

Overall, I loved the buttery smoothness of the House Blend II. It seems like a very versatile mouthpiece and is on my list of tenor mouthpieces to suggest to high school and college students that have to play in a variety of styles and genres.

Although I felt like I could get a respectable volume from the 7,  I would be interested in trying this mouthpiece out in a 7* or 8 just for kicks.  I love the focus and pure tone of the 7 but would like to see if the 7* or 8 would keep the same focus and purity while allowing more air for volume.  If I was playing in a loud band with electric instruments like many of us do I would opt for the slightly larger tip I think but that is just me.   This one has a beautiful and gorgeous sound in my opinion.

If you are interested in trying a Mouthpiece Cafe House Blend II out you can contact Brian and Erik through the Mouthpiece Cafe Website .  Tell him Steve sent you………….Great work guys!!

Disclosure: I have not received any compensation or products for writing this review. I am borrowing this mouthpiece from a fellow saxophone player who was kind enough to let me borrow it. Regardless, I only review mouthpieces and other saxophone related products that I enjoy and believe will be a good choice for other saxophone players to try also.    Steve Neff

Thank you Steve for another great review. I have been enjoying my Mouthpiece Cafe House Blend II for while. I am amazed by its response and range of power and colors it offers while remaining extremely flexible and easy to play.

On your SBA, the way you play it, it sounds amazing. Thanks for inspiring us.

I have an original HB tenor and agree that the craftsmanship is top-notch. If I’m not mistaken, these pieces are not hard rubber, but a resin blend of some kind, which might explain the relatively low price for a boutique quality mouthpiece. This doesn’t seem to get mentioned much, if true. I find it on the bright side and louder than your “average” hard rubber Link.

Steve, I’ve been so curious about this piece! I’m currently playing a Saxquest “The Core” on tenor and it’s a great mouthpiece, but sometimes I want a piece with some more focus and projection. I’ve been thinking about the HB II and/or the Okutsu Traditional II. I know they’re both great pieces but how would you describe the differences?

Thanks for providing such a great resource for all of us!

btw, I’m currently playing a Mouthpiece Guys NYC 7 on alto and love it!

Thank you for all the educational information you provide.  I am a classically trained musician.  Professionally, I am a 4th and 5th grade band teacher.  I have played piano and sax for many years, but now I am starting to gig out more. I have always improvised by ear in the past. I have gotten by with my strong sense of pitch, rhythm and melodic contour. However, I want to go deeper. I want to play with a greater variety of melodic and rhythmic ideas to pull from.  I have studied to gain a … Read more

I would like to say that in the last year my sax playing has progressed loads from your lessons. I have had a sax for about 20 years and dabbled with lessons from a few teachers and have learnt very little from them. As you have said in your lessons many teachers tell you to use the blues scale and leave it there, not even showing you the resolution points!!. I am now believing I can in time become a good improviser.
Thanks again,
Shane

After reading your story I will never feel quite right about complaining about any of my MINOR health issues!!    God bless Steve and I really hope that your health doesn’t stop you from fulfilling your calling.    These books have been such a help to open up my jazz vocabulary…   Thanks so much for sharing your story and for providing these great teaching tools…   John Leclerc   Saxophonist / composer/ EWI player and professional working musician of 35 years….

Steve, just a note to say thanks.

I’ve been playing a long time, but your material, laid out in such a thoughtful way, helps me to understand concepts in a new and deeper way.

You are a true gift to the jazz community.

I’ve been downloading your lessons for 4 months now (20 lesson) and I have noticed tremendous growth in my playing thus far! I’m so happy that I stumbled upon your site!

Your major diatonic patterns book is great. I”m studying the first twenty patterns (first twenty pages) each day with different articulation each day and slowly increasing the tempo each week or so.  There is a noticeable improvement in finger coordination across all keys and its amazing how much more secure I feel on the difficult keys when attempting to play pieces with 5+ flats/sharps. I’m able to sort out the fingerings for these pieces now much more quickly than before, often in one or two … Read more

By the way, BIG COMPLIMENTS to you, Steve! Not only are you a great player, you are also a great teacher! I, too, am a woodwinds player/teacher. I have new inspiration to play and teach because of you. The concepts and “thinking” is similar to what I already learned in College, but hearing you explain and PLAY the concepts REALLY MAKES THE DIFFERENCE! Also, your written patterns are more interesting than other books I have seen! Keep up the good work. I will be recommending your sit… Read more

For anyone living in remote areas away from live jazz sax teachers, Neff is the way to go. In fact this is a great resource for anyone seriously interested in mastering the sax. I’ve never been disappointed in a lesson.

Absolutely the best learning experience in my 40 years of playing. These books are awesome!!

Just to say thanks for your advice and lessons.  I’ve just read your amazing story.  I really appreciate what you do in regards to teaching.  I have bought a couple of your lessons and frankly they’re undersold.   I’ve learned much more with these two lessons than with 2 years of sax teachers.   Thanks so much………..

I can see from your instructional videos that you are a fantastic teacher – one that can truly relate to all ages – humble yet very positive in approach – never coming across as superior and yet so totally capable of demonstrating the principles and techniques that you seek to impart to the students. I have gained so much confidence in my playing from “pouring over” time and again these invaluable lessons. Invaluable not only in musical content, but also in human interaction content. Two years later I began a search for a sax teacher and happened to come across Steve Neff when I was searching YouTube for sax teachers.  I went to neffmusic.com and was very impressed with the lessons Steve Neff was offering.  The concept of selecting lessons was an approach that I thought was unique and purchased a few lessons.  I liked the lessons so much that I signed-up for a 6 month package. I was very happy with all the lessons I selected.  I also purchased Steve’s book Mastering the B… Read more

I am a music book junkie and I have to say that your books are the most clear, user friendly, and helpful books I own.  They are my absolute favorites and I only wish I had them years ago.  I wouldn’t change a thing about the experience I had in acquiring my degree at Berklee, but my playing has perhaps grown more in the time I’ve spent buried in your books and lessons.  Keep up the great work!!! Thanks, John

Hello Steve, I’m getting so much out of your lessons and books, amazing how much one may think one knows, there is always a new frontier or new way to view something you think you had somewhat down. You have taken it all to a new level and am so grateful. Your lessons are so down to earth and understandable and clear!  Thanks so much Steve! Cheers, Eddie

I’ve been a member of Steve’s site for about six months now and the difference it has made to my playing is immeasurable. The (many) benefits of this membership are that you can have lessons at time convenient to you, they work out A LOT cheaper than face-to-face lessons with a teacher of the same calibre and you can replay them ad infinitum. I don’t know how many times have I had lessons in the past where I’ve ended up covering the same concepts when really a ‘replay’ of the last lesson would h… Read more

I want to thank you for your “Ultimate II-V-I Primer”  which has sent me off on a much better path to improvisation.  The primer and the four bound books I have will keep me busy for a long time.  I like your lessons for two reasons.  The lessons work and THEY ARE FUN.  Thanks again.

First, I’m really excited about your materials! This site is a vast resource for any aspiring (and maybe already inspired) jazz musicians. I’m not a sax player, I play mandolin and fiddle, but have been learning jazz and playing weekly with a quintet for the past 6 months and have been struggling with all of the issues you get into in your lessons. I bought several books and lessons and plan to continue with some others as soon as I organize my practice routine. Thanks again for a great site … Read more

Thank You Steve. I think that I will be busy for years. Thank You for your great contribution to jazz music. Your books, more than teaching “how to play jazz”, actually teach “how to speak jazz”. I wish I found your methods years ago.

Mr. Neff,  I want to thank you for sharing your God-given talents through your on-line lessons.  My husband, Michael, is blind, but he is a great sax player and he has been enjoying your lessons for quite some time now.  It’s not unusual for me to hear “Hey, babe, listen to THIS!” – and he will cut loose on his sax, just thrilled at what he learned during his session with you.  His excitement warms my heart!  You have no idea how much you have poured into my husband.  You have opened musical … Read more

Your material is great! I got your New Altissimo Lesson 6 months ago and I have learned more from that than in all my 44 years of playing! I appreciate your down to earth teaching method and I really appreciate the heart that you teach with. I have been a subscriber to your lessons for the past 6 months and I have learned a great deal. It is so refreshing to have a great player, who can provide lessons and examples in a manner which is understandable to most any enthusiastic saxophonist who is ready to improve. not just the, do this, do that, memorize this, memorize that… while all that is absolutely necessary, you go on to give reasons and examples to explain and validate why you have to do all of these things, the benefits, if you will… that is the key for me, you tell, explain, demonstrate, explain some more, you give perso… Read more

Hi Steve,

First, I want to thank you for all of your great lessons. They are like a “For Dummies” version of all the books on my shelf. The lessons break things down into manageable pieces, and give me the confidence that I’m practicing the right pieces. I’m starting to make progress.   Thank You,   Kim
