Max Ionata Ridiculously Great Parole Parole Tenor Saxophone Solo Transcription

May 28, 2020 by Steve 2 Comments

I have another treat for all of you!  A couple of weeks ago,  I discovered a new sax player on Facebook who was posting killer transcriptions on Youtube. His name is Dimitrii Sergheev from Moldova.  Dimitrii caught my attention because we seem to have the exact same tastes in great tenor sax solos that need to be transcribed.

I reached out to Dimitrii on Facebook and he happily sent me a bunch of his transcription and gave me permission to post them here on my site.  Please support Dimitrii so that he is encouraged to keep transcribing these great sax solos!!!  You can find him at Dimtrii Sergheev’s Youtube where you can “like” and “follow” his page to keep up to date with his latest transcriptions.  You can also find him on his facebook page as well as hear samples of his sax playing on his soundcloud page.

Max Ionata’s Live Tenor Sax Solo on Parole Parole (starts at 2:06) Also check out the video from 3:30-4:00!!!  I love the energy build up and the part where the singer is singing a Bb for tenor sax and Max goes up to an altissimo A and just holds it against the Bb until finally resolving to the Bb. Amazing!

The second solo transcription to check out from Dimitrii Sergheev is this ridiculously great Max Ionata tenor saxophone solo on Parole Parole from the live Youtube video above of Max performing with the Greta Panettieri Quartet.

I can’t express how great this tenor sax solo is by Max!  It grooves incredibly and the lines are just so hip and soulful. It has that raw energy that you find in a “live” setting where anything can happen and Max nails it!  The band and Greta are smoking as well.  I love the interplay towards the end of the solo where everyone is jamming together while max is soloing!  So much energy!

Below is Dimitrii’s Youtube transcription of the solo so you can hear it while following the transcription at the same time.  Below that is a link where you can download the PDF of this great solo.   Great job Dimitrii and thanks for sharing this great transcription with all of us!!    Steve

If you love these type of solo lines, be sure to check out my PDF books “Approach Note Velocity Volume 1-Major” “Approach Note Velocity Volume 2-Minor“, which includes hundreds of approach note lines over  major and minor chords that I have written out in all 12 keys. These lines are the foundation to building a great jazz vocabulary!!

Steve – Thank you for posting this performance. The whole band sounded great, and needless to say Max’s tenor solo was a highlight. I really got into it and have viewed it a number of times. Thank you again.

Hi Steve, I have been shedding your materials for quite a while now and I love them! They are extremely well organized and presented and there are tons of ’em! I really appreciate your methodical approach and find myself referring students to your resources often.  Thanks so much!

I am enjoying your style of teaching, and you’ve done a great job with the videos….good sound quality and well constructed lessons.  Balances the more guitaristic material found on the majority of guitar based programs.  Jazz vocab is what I’m all about at this point in the journey.  I especially dig the fact that you’ve studied with Bergonzi…helps me see his voluminous output in a more bite sized way.

Hey Steve, My name is Jason Freese and I play keyboards and sax in the band Green Day.  I grew up taking sax lessons from Eric Marienthal when I was a kid and got out of it for a long time. I ran into you on youtube while searching for sax stuff. I bought a whole bunch of your lessons and have been loving it! Thanks! Here is my wikipedia so you can see the albums I’ve played on….Thanks again. It’s sparked my interest in practicing again.   Jason

Thank you for the wealth of helpful lessons you’ve provided over the years.  I truly feel as though it has improved my playing more than the 4 years I spent at Berklee… and that’s not a slight on the school as I loved my experience there.

I’ve been a member of Steve’s site for about six months now and the difference it has made to my playing is immeasurable. The (many) benefits of this membership are that you can have lessons at time convenient to you, they work out A LOT cheaper than face-to-face lessons with a teacher of the same calibre and you can replay them ad infinitum. I don’t know how many times have I had lessons in the past where I’ve ended up covering the same concepts when really a ‘replay’ of the last lesson would h… Read more

Your material is great! I got your New Altissimo Lesson 6 months ago and I have learned more from that than in all my 44 years of playing! I appreciate your down to earth teaching method and I really appreciate the heart that you teach with. I have been a subscriber to your lessons for the past 6 months and I have learned a great deal. Over that period of time I have had some questions and you have never failed to respond. Thanks! I have already recommended your lessons to a number of players in… Read more

Mr. Neff,  I want to thank you for sharing your God-given talents through your on-line lessons.  My husband, Michael, is blind, but he is a great sax player and he has been enjoying your lessons for quite some time now.  It’s not unusual for me to hear “Hey, babe, listen to THIS!” – and he will cut loose on his sax, just thrilled at what he learned during his session with you.  His excitement warms my heart!  You have no idea how much you have poured into my husband.  You have opened musical … Read more
