Attisound Black Mamba Brass Tenor Saxophone Mouthpiece Review

January 4, 2017 by Steve 4 Comments

Today, I am reviewing a mouthpiece made by Carlo Atti in Italy.  I had never heard of Attisound mouthpieces but Carlo contacted me last year and asked if I would be interested in reviewing some of his mouthpieces on my site.  I was curious after looking at some pictures and agreed to try them out.  He sent me a package with various sample mouthpieces to try.   The first mouthpiece to be reviewed  is an Attisound “Black Mamba” brass tenor saxophone mouthpiece (I say “Black Mambo” in the sound clip but it is “Mamba”).

Attisound Black Mamba Brass Tenor Saxophone Mouthpiece

The Attisound mouthpieces that I received were a mix of various tenor mouthpieces, an alto mouthpiece and a soprano mouthpiece.  I received two Black Mamba tenor sax mouthpieces both of which are 8* tip openings and have the same design.  One is this brass mouthpiece I am reviewing and the other is black aluminum which I will be reviewing shortly.

The Attisound Black Mamba tenor mouthpiece looks well made and plays great for me.  I have to admit that at first,  I had what I call “switching to a high baffle mouthpiece syndrome”.  I have written about this before but basically I encounter it when ever I make an abrupt switch from a low baffle large chamber mouthpiece to a high baffle small chamber mouthpiece.  I find that when I first switch from low baffle to high my tone sounds thin and super edgy and bright.  I’ve learned not to make snap judgements as it takes me some time to acclimate to the new mouthpiece and settle in with it.   As I play I tend to make small adjustments with embouchure, air and throat voicing to fatten the tone and adapt it to what I hear in my head. Which I feel like I did after a few hours of playing on the Black Mamba…………

The tip and rails of the Attisound Black Mamba don’t look particularly thin but they aren’t as wide as I have seen on other mouthpieces either.  My Rigotti and  Vandoren Java reeds matched perfectly with the tip curve of the mouthpiece which I always like. Every reed that I tried on all the Attisound mouthpieces sent got suction and retained it also.  That coupled with the fact that the mouthpieces played well for me makes me think that Carlos knows what he is doing when it comes to the facing curve.

The Attisound mouthpiece came with a Attisound ligature that could be used on all the tenor mouthpieces.  You can see the ligature in the pictures towards the bottom of the page.  The ligature is made out of stainless steel and fits the tenor mouthpieces perfectly.  My only complaint about the ligature is that it fits the mouthpiece body so exactly that you have to be very careful putting it on.  (I have double vision which doesn’t help me with that either…….). I accidentally shaved off a corner of a reed with it when putting it on.  Later, I found I could slide the ligature on more safely at a slight angle but then found that I was scratching one side of the brass mouthpiece with an edge of the stainless steel ligature.  I finally figured out that it was easier to leave the ligature on the mouthpiece, loosen it and slide the butt end of the reed underneath.  This was much easier for me.

I really liked the ligature although I would like to see some lines designed into the screw you tighten so you can get more of a grip on the screw and it is not as smooth.  I will say that the way the ligature is tightened by the screw on top works so well that it is hard to know how tight the ligature is on the reed.  At first I was tightening down the screw until it wouldn’t tighten anymore but soon realized that I was way over tightening the ligature.   With a few turns to loosen it the reed was still held on firmly and it improved the response of the reed greatly.

The Black Mamba has what I would consider a medium high baffle.  It shoots down from the tip in almost a straight line until it reaches the small chamber which has a scooped out entrance to the chamber.  You see these scooped out chambers in Berg Larsen mouthpiece quite often. These chambers are also commonly called “bullet” chambers.

I tried both Rigotti Gold as well as Vandoren Java reeds on the Black Mamba but there was something about the Java reeds that I just liked more than the Rigottis.   Rigotti reeds can sometimes be overly edgy for me on certain shorter facing curves and on the Attisound tenor mouthpieces I found that as well.  On one of my other Attisound mouthpiece reviews I will also post a clip with a Rigotti reed so you can hear what that sounds like also in comparison.

While listening to the sound clip you can hear how bright, edgy and focused the Black Mamba can get even in the first few seconds.  I recorded one clip but added a bit of reverb on the second clip so you can hear how that sounds also.

The intonation was great on the Black Mamba with nothing unusual to report.  Played at full blast I felt like it got a bit of a Lenny Picket vibe going to it.   Altissimo was really easy to get as would be expected on a higher baffled piece.  I felt like the whole range of the horn was smooth and even. Certain notes could easily be overblown when playing full blast which is a common rock sax affect (Ex. 1:33 in the clip……..).

I think the Black Mamba would be a great rock n’ roll, funk or blues sax tone if you like that bright edgier sound when soloing.  It can be dialed back a bit with less air and subtone on the lower notes also (Ex. 2:48  and 3:16 in the clip….).  Obviously, you have to have a preference for this brighter edgier tone at loud volumes but if you are into that scene then this could be a good mouthpiece to check out………

You can contact Carlo Atti on his website at www.attisoundmouthpiece.com.  I will be reviewing some of his other models shortly the black aluminum Black Mamba.  Tell him Steve sent you………….Great work Carlo!!

Let me know what you think in the comments below. Thanks, Steve

Disclosure: I received the sample mouthpiece mentioned above for free in the hope that I would try it and perhaps review it on my blog. Regardless, I only review mouthpieces and other saxophone related products that I enjoy and believe will be a good choice for other saxophone players to try also.    Steve Neff

Just wanted to send you a quick note to say thank you for being you, your playing, your website and your desire to help others. I’m a professional musician in the US Army and I’ve visited your website almost every day since discovering it a couple of months ago. Your lessons are profound and easy to use. I’ve purchased most of your PDF books and now am starting to delve more into the video and audio lessons.  Thank you for being a great resource!

After reading your story I will never feel quite right about complaining about any of my MINOR health issues!!    God bless Steve and I really hope that your health doesn’t stop you from fulfilling your calling.    These books have been such a help to open up my jazz vocabulary…   Thanks so much for sharing your story and for providing these great teaching tools…   John Leclerc   Saxophonist / composer/ EWI player and professional working musician of 35 years….

I want to let you know that your instructional material is transforming my playing.  It is an immense pleasure to learn and play now, and I can’t tell you how grateful I am. The instructional material I got from you is by far the best of any I own (and I have over 100 books, DVDs, and what not). I literally can’t thank you enough! Deric

I just joined Neff Music last month. I can’t tell you how excited I’ve been to be able to pick back up on lessons. I’ve been in a rut and you got me out! I’ve especially appreciated the Lesson Path section. It was so clear I knew exactly where to jump in and start. Many many thanks!

Hi Steve,

First, I want to thank you for all of your great lessons. They are like a “For Dummies” version of all the books on my shelf. The lessons break things down into manageable pieces, and give me the confidence that I’m practicing the right pieces. I’m starting to make progress.   Thank You,   Kim

I’ve been downloading your lessons for 4 months now (20 lesson) and I have noticed tremendous growth in my playing thus far! I’m so happy that I stumbled upon your site!

I’ve been having ‘ online’  lessons with Steve for a few months now. Being a teacher myself I had had some reservations with the idea at first and the practicalities of it .  Let me just say that my playing has taken a huge leaps forward while studying with Steve and continues to do so.Steve studied with some renowned player/teachers such as Bergonzi and Garzone– this in itself is invaluable but Steve teaches from his own books, which cover a a vast amount of  jazz language. Hi Steve, I have been shedding your materials for quite a while now and I love them! They are extremely well organized and presented and there are tons of ’em! I really appreciate your methodical approach and find myself referring students to your resources often.  Thanks so much!

I want to say something about Steve Neff’s series of lessons, Beginner Jazz Improvisation. For a couple of years I tried many beginner lessons and my problem was that there was a gap between lessons that were fairly simple and ones that I was not quite ready for and my progress stalled out. That problem was solved with the series Beginner Jazz Improvisation. He guides you step by step along the way and builds a foundation for learning jazz and blues. He leaves no question about what to practice … Read more

I can see from your instructional videos that you are a fantastic teacher – one that can truly relate to all ages – humble yet very positive in approach – never coming across as superior and yet so totally capable of demonstrating the principles and techniques that you seek to impart to the students. I have gained so much confidence in my playing from “pouring over” time and again these invaluable lessons. Invaluable not only in musical content, but also in human interaction content. Hey Steve, My name is Jason Freese and I play keyboards and sax in the band Green Day.  I grew up taking sax lessons from Eric Marienthal when I was a kid and got out of it for a long time. I ran into you on youtube while searching for sax stuff. I bought a whole bunch of your lessons and have been loving it! Thanks! Here is my wikipedia so you can see the albums I’ve played on….Thanks again. It’s sparked my interest in practicing again.   Jason

Steve really changed my way of practicing: I got a whole lot of new ideas for my playing the tenor.  His lessons are really helpful, give a lot stuff to practice and give clear answers to complicated stuff.  Steve has a lot of humor and I wish I had laughed so much in my former days with the horn.  All topics, from Blues to Approach note are dealt with clearness that wet ones appetite to play and practice that great ideas.

Hi Steve, I live in a gorgeous but rural area of Oregon-no music store within 80 miles. Your lessons are my lifeline!  Truly the best there are anywhere online. Love your playing. Love your teaching.  Thanks again. Ed

Thank you so much for the great job you are doing to help further our jazz studies. Though I make my living as a repairer of musical instruments I am a student of jazz and have been fortunate enough to be involved with a big band and a combo for the last several years. As my children began to leave “the nest” I had decided to dedicate the next half of my life to a more serious study of the sax but I didn’t know exactly how I would go about doing this until a friend of mine turned me onto your si… Read more

Thank you for the wealth of helpful lessons you’ve provided over the years.  I truly feel as though it has improved my playing more than the 4 years I spent at Berklee… and that’s not a slight on the school as I loved my experience there.

Two years later I began a search for a sax teacher and happened to come across Steve Neff when I was searching YouTube for sax teachers.  I went to neffmusic.com and was very impressed with the lessons Steve Neff was offering.  The concept of selecting lessons was an approach that I thought was unique and purchased a few lessons.  I liked the lessons so much that I signed-up for a 6 month package. I was very happy with all the lessons I selected.  I also purchased Steve’s book Mastering the B… Read more

Never really had lessons before just kinda worked things out on my own. Was in a rut but your lessons are really helpful in opening melodic possibilities. Ur an awesome resource to the saxophone community. Thanks for sharing.

Hey Steve! I hope you and your family are well.  I’m just writing to say thank you so much for all the resources you have made available to the saxophone community. I just started looking at my lessons and I have to say, dude you are awesome.  I ABSOLUTELY will learn from you!  I started the tenor about 1 ½ yrs ago and have since picked up an alto, and more recently a soprano.  I spend most of the time on the tenor, followed by soprano, and have only gotten to the alto a few times.  I think I’ll be sticking with tenor.  I’m having a great time and hope one day to play well enough to get regular gigs.  I’ve been playing keys for about 35 years (… Read more

It is so refreshing to have a great player, who can provide lessons and examples in a manner which is understandable to most any enthusiastic saxophonist who is ready to improve. not just the, do this, do that, memorize this, memorize that… while all that is absolutely necessary, you go on to give reasons and examples to explain and validate why you have to do all of these things, the benefits, if you will… that is the key for me, you tell, explain, demonstrate, explain some more, you give perso… Read more

First, I’m really excited about your materials! This site is a vast resource for any aspiring (and maybe already inspired) jazz musicians. I’m not a sax player, I play mandolin and fiddle, but have been learning jazz and playing weekly with a quintet for the past 6 months and have been struggling with all of the issues you get into in your lessons. I bought several books and lessons and plan to continue with some others as soon as I organize my practice routine. Thanks again for a great site … Read more
