Morgan ML 8* Tenor Saxophone Mouthpiece

February 2, 2010 by Steve 7 Comments

This a Morgan ML tenor mouthpiece.  I received this from a friend of mine who loves it.  These use to be made by Ralph Morgan but now are made by Brian Powell and Eric Greiffenhagen.   They both used to work with Ralph Morgan.   These two guys have done a great job at keeping the standards high.  They are both artists and have learned from the best (Ralph Morgan).  The tip opening of this mouthpiece is an 8* which is a .105 I believe.  It has a big sound and the mouthpiece feels like it is vibrating when I play it.    It plays on the darker side but is so free blowing that the air just passes through it effortlessly.

I wish I could spend more time with this piece.  It is very easy to play.  It has a huge sound but is so easy to play that you don’t even have to think about it. If I blow more the sound gets a bit brighter.  I could almost see doing a R&B gig on this piece.   Let me know what you think. Steve

    Hey Steve,
i just bought a morgan 8L a few weeks ago and I was wondering what type of reed you used on this piece and if this type worked. also, what type of ligature would you recommend? my standard 2 screw lig is too big for this piece. I was thinking about trying a rovner or something.
thanks, you sound great on this piece!

I used Vandoren Java reeds 2 1/2 I believe, I have a new ligature that is really great. It’s by Marc Jean in Canada, I’ve been using it on my hard rubber pieces for the last week and really like it!

    Sounding great as usual 🙂

Is the Marc Jean ligature really great? Looks like a Bonade clone to me. How does it compare to the Optimum?

I have a couple of the Bonade ligatures and it is similar in design. I do like it better than the Bonade though. It seems like the sound is just a bit bigger or something but also more centered and focused. I’m thinking about getting an alto ligature to try also.

    Hey Steve,
Did you happen to try the alto Marc Jean ligature yet? I asked on SOTW what your comparisons to the Optimum were.
I’ve been looking into the following ligs:

    -francois louis
    -optimum
    -marc jean
    -bg tradition

Not yet. It’s in the mail to me as we speak. I was going to wait until I get it and then do a ligature review on my blog. steve

Steve as expensive as this mouthpiece is you think it would provide you with a cap and lig. You spend you’re time trying to out fit it instead of playing it. I have a 9 l and it plays smooth and hits the top tones but it a chore getting the right set up tools to play it.
