Metal Freddie Gregory Mark IV 8 Tenor Saxophone Mouthpiece

August 14, 2009 by Steve 8 Comments

I received this tenor sax mouthpiece in a trade deal for one of my other mouthpieces.  This is a metal Freddie Gregory Mark IV size 8 tenor saxophone mouthpiece.  It has the ridges on the outside and a high rollover baffle in it.  I have to say I am surprised that this tenor saxophone mouthpiece isn’t brighter than it is.  The baffle is pretty high and long.

Metal Freddie Gregory Mark IV Tenor Mouthpiece

Freddie Gregory’s description of this mouthpiece on his website is that it is warm and medium bright. I would say that is pretty accurate.  It’s like a link STM with more power without losing the fatness of that Otto Link type sound.  This clip is with a 3 reed which makes it a little darker than if I played it with a 2 1/2 strength reed.   I’m playing around on a blues using the diminished scale because of a lesson I’m working on along those lines. Check it out…….

You always sound like you’ve been playing for hours before you recorded. In other words like a master. K

    Hello there 🙂

Some of you may have come across my father – Freddie Gregory in the Saxophone industry as the mouthpiece craftsman. In his celebration since his passing, I have created a Tribute Page to share with all of you. If you have any experiences or stories with my father I would love to hear, so please do stop by on the page and say hello! 🙂
