This is a Ralph Morgan tenor saxophone mouthpiece that I won off ebay. These are the best tenor mouthpieces for the price out there. I’ve owned 3 of Mr. Morgans mouthpieces as well as 3 of his clarinet mouthpieces. Very consistent work. You know when you order a Morgan that you won’t get a dud. This has a more focused tone and is a little brighter than a 9L piece I use to have. the sound of it can be compared to a hard rubber otto link but with more power and focus to it. About a year ago I had a Ralph Morgan 8M that you can hear a clip of elsewhere on my blog. The first clip is a Jerry Bergonzi tune called “On the Brink”. It’s to the changes of Confirmation. I heard it on a recording and liked the rhythmic displacement of the melody. I think I started it a bit too fast due to the large amount of xmas chocolates I’ve eaten tonight. The second clip is a ballad so you can really hear the tone of the Morgan better. I recorded it the next day after the affects of the chocolate wore off. It’s “Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most”. One the ballad I’m playing on a slightly softer reed than the first clip. It’s a Java 2 1/2 and really plays nicely with this piece. Listen………

How are you doing? I like how these and the others clips with Morgan mouthpieces sound. I have the chance to buy a Morgan Excalibur but I do not know how it sounds. Can you explain me the difference between these Morgans and the Excalibur model?

The excalibers sound quite a bit brighter to me. I have never really liked the ones I have played because they were too bright for me but it all depends on your sound. I have been told I sound quite a bit brighter on pieces than other players playing the same piece so you might be darker on them.
I just wanted to throw this at you, but I absolutely love the “On the Brink” clip. I really don’t know what it is about that clip, but its giving me a musical high. Really nobody could understand this, but I’d guess it would be the equivalent of never hearing a single sax player on the planet play sax and all of a sudden be at a Brecker or Gene Ammons performance. Seriously its like a mental/musical zoning. My world is like dissapearing before me. I know it sounds ridiculous but I don’t get it either. Something with that articulation mixed with that slight breath and tone is making my mind go wild. I’m listening to Bergonzi play this right now and it doesn’t even compare. Great job Steve, after reading your “Funny as a Brain Tumor” series, I’m telling myself over and over that God is much too kind to sacrifice one of his greatest musical gifts to the world.

I used a Vandoren Optimum ligature for hard rubber tenor sax mouthpiece with this. Worked great.
