I was going through my computer this morning deleting random junk files and miscellaneous recordings from the past when I came across some clips from a gig some 10+ years ago. It’s a rough “live” gig recording and not a polished studio recording so try not to be too critical of it. I believe I’m playing my trusty JVW (Jon Van Wie) refaced Otto Link mouthpiece on this gig as I recognize the sound of it.

The first clip is a solo on “Shame” and the second is a bit of noodling around on “Use Me”. The Shame clip sounds a bit dissonant at the :14 second mark but I believe that is a drunk guy screaming loudly during my solo. I believe this was a gig with some subs in the band as I don’t recognize the female vocalists on the recording. Nothing earth shattering but typical of how I play on this type of material……………

Hi Steve,
I have purchased many of your books. I noticed that in the introduction to your various books you don’t really recommend using a particular form of articulation, and even in your exercises written out in all 12 keys there are not usually any articulation marks or dynamics or phrasing suggestions. When I practice from your books Steve, could you recommend a certain technique that I should be using? I seem to either use no articulation so that all the notes run together, or I tongue every single note so it sounds staccato. There is no in-between. Can you help me Steve?
Harold, I usually use jazz articulation which is tonguing on the offbeats and slurring into the downbeats. I have a bunch of lessons on that subject. http://www.neffmusic.com/blog/?s=basic+jazz+articulation Steve
