Description

Dominant Blues Approach Note Mastery is a new series of lessons that takes a fresh approach to learning all of your dominant approach note lines and resolutions in all 12 keys over a standard 12 bar blues form.

In this series we will be applying the approach patterns and lines from my “Approach Note Velocity” books to a standard 12 bar blues progressions in all 12 keys. The goal of these lessons is for the student to master each of these approach patterns as well as learning how to apply these lines and jazz vocabulary to chord changes as you go.

I teach in depth about how to apply these lines to each chord in a standard 12 bar blues and the reasons behind each choice of approach note line. I demonstrate all the lines on the soprano saxophone and give you tips and ideas on how to best practice and eventually master them in all 12 keys.

Lesson 3 continues where lesson 1 and 2 let off with an approach note line that I feel gives the student a great tool to travel from chord tone to chord tone through any chord progression. This lesson works with the same approach line as lesson 1 and 2 but introduces a new twist to the line that gives the improviser the ability to jump and turn the line in different directions. In future lessons, we will be linking a variety of approach note lines to each other to create flowing running lines that weave in and out of the tonality to create interesting shapes and sounds over the chord changes of a 12 bar blues that can also be applied to a variety of standard chord progressions as well.

This will be a long series but I hope to add some elements to these lessons that will make learning the approach note lines a bit easier and more interesting along the way. (35 Minute Video Lesson, 4 PDF pages of approach note lines over a 12 bar blues, 3 play along tracks at 85, 110 and 140 bpm, chords progression PDF sheets of play along for concert, Bb and Eb instruments)

Testimonials

Hi Steve, I live in a gorgeous but rural area of Oregon-no music store within 80 miles. Your lessons are my lifeline!  Truly the best there are anywhere online. Love your playing. Love your teaching.  Thanks again. Ed

Hello Steve,

I have not received my alto yet but have already gone through 14 lessons. I love your approach, style, knowledge and competence. I now regret so much to have stayed away from playing the sax for the past 45-50 years…(I am 65).  But It is never too late to get back to your first love. After 23 years in compuer sciences and 22 years in finances…I am now back to music for the rest of my life.

Doing some research on the net, I found this:

Just a brief note to compliment you on your teaching skills and in particular for the honesty of your lessons.  I am a returning alto sax player in my 50’s and I was looking for a no nonsense, straight to the point kind of guidance. I had intended to email you with a few questions regarding the use of the bis key but then I noticed that there was a lesson on that specific topic and after viewing it,  all my questions were answered. I once took a group lesson with a well known professional sax … Read more

Love your lessons!  I have been using your lesson packages for many months now, and am learning a lot.  It is so perfect for me with a very busy adult schedule and difficulty in taking jazz/improv music lessons from reputable instructors who live and hour or more away from me.

I just joined Neff Music last month. I can’t tell you how excited I’ve been to be able to pick back up on lessons. I’ve been in a rut and you got me out! I’ve especially appreciated the Lesson Path section. It was so clear I knew exactly where to jump in and start. Many many thanks!

Hey Steve, I’m a 22-year-old from Australia. I thought it would be worth saying. You’re an absolute legend. I can’t thank you enough. You have helped me rekindle my love for the saxophone and music as a whole. All the best for the future, your work doesn’t go unnoticed. PS. I am loving your devastating minor lines pdf.

Never really had lessons before just kinda worked things out on my own. Was in a rut but your lessons are really helpful in opening melodic possibilities. Ur an awesome resource to the saxophone community. Thanks for sharing.

I just wanted to write a thank you note to you for this website. I play and teach saxophone, but I have always been intimidated by the gear aspect. Your website has helped me become a lot more knowledgable. Your knowledge is staggering! I’m telling all my students about your website. Pierre

I want to say something about Steve Neff’s series of lessons, Beginner Jazz Improvisation. For a couple of years I tried many beginner lessons and my problem was that there was a gap between lessons that were fairly simple and ones that I was not quite ready for and my progress stalled out. That problem was solved with the series Beginner Jazz Improvisation. He guides you step by step along the way and builds a foundation for learning jazz and blues. He leaves no question about what to practice … Read more
