The Style of Sonny Rollins Lesson 1-Moritat

This lesson is based off of a great solo by Sonny Rollins on the tune “Moritat”. (Mac the Knife).  Sonny Rollins is one of the great legends on the tenor saxophone.  The song Moritat is form the CD “Saxophone Colossus”.  This is one of my  favorite  recordings of all time.

This lesson is about taking a solo, transcribing it and then the process of learning and assimilating aspects of it into your own playing.  This lesson is not so much about licks but more about copying Sonny Rollins style, phrasing and swing feel.

I include the first half of the solo (3 pages) in Bb,Eb and C and play examples from the solo on the tenor saxophone (37 Minute Video)
