Description

This is lesson 2A in the beginner improvisation series for alto sax.  In this series of lessons I will take you from the very beginning and teach you how to improvise on the alto saxophone.  In lesson 2A I teach you the F major scale, the G dorian scale, the C mixolydian scale and the chords that these work over.   I teach you how to use these to immediately start improvising with music.  I also  show you how to practice these scales and chords as well as how to improvise with  them using some Jamey Aebersold play alongs.  I also show you the D blues scale and talk about how to use it against F major and D minor.  I spend a lot of time talking about hearing the resolution points within each scale and chord and what to listen for when improvising.  My goal with these series of lessons is too teach you all the basic chords and scales in every key and get you improvising in a fluent way over some common jazz standards. (Audio,Video & PDF) (31 Minute Video Lesson)

As a long-time paper-trained musician, my past experiences with attempting learn to play jazz (from the comfort of my own home) has been to pick up a book with a CD. I would quickly get discouraged by the lack of direction and give up. After watching your first two lessons for Beginner Jazz Improvisation I am happily on my way to understanding not only the how, but the why part of what I am doing. Having you explain and demonstrate through your videos exactly what I am listening for in each exercise makes such a huge difference. I feel like I can learn to do this in a methodical, linear way that I did not think was possible to do with jazz improvisation. Thank you.

Testimonials

I am enjoying your style of teaching, and you’ve done a great job with the videos….good sound quality and well constructed lessons.  Balances the more guitaristic material found on the majority of guitar based programs.  Jazz vocab is what I’m all about at this point in the journey.  I especially dig the fact that you’ve studied with Bergonzi…helps me see his voluminous output in a more bite sized way.

For anyone living in remote areas away from live jazz sax teachers, Neff is the way to go. In fact this is a great resource for anyone seriously interested in mastering the sax. I’ve never been disappointed in a lesson.

I have been a member of Neffmusic for more than a year now and have enjoyed every minute of it! I have not only been going thru the Dominant Bebop Scale lessons and book (OUTSTANDING!) but the mouthpiece reviews, solo clips and transcriptions are very interesting. Steve approach to beginning and intermediate improv have given me many new pathways to teach my high school jazz ensemble students. Congratulations Steve, great product!

Steve,

I have played for many years and have enjoyed going “back to the basics” in some of your lessons!  You have such a gift for explaining concepts.  As I have gotten older, some of the basic things have gotten muddled because I just play, not knowing why.  As I refresh myself with “why”, it increases my confidence and expands my playing.  Thank you so much for using your gift!  You are a blessing!

I am a music book junkie and I have to say that your books are the most clear, user friendly, and helpful books I own.  They are my absolute favorites and I only wish I had them years ago.  I wouldn’t change a thing about the experience I had in acquiring my degree at Berklee, but my playing has perhaps grown more in the time I’ve spent buried in your books and lessons.  Keep up the great work!!! Thanks, John

I can see from your instructional videos that you are a fantastic teacher – one that can truly relate to all ages – humble yet very positive in approach – never coming across as superior and yet so totally capable of demonstrating the principles and techniques that you seek to impart to the students. I have gained so much confidence in my playing from “pouring over” time and again these invaluable lessons. Invaluable not only in musical content, but also in human interaction content. I am absolu… Read more

I’ve been having ‘ online’  lessons with Steve for a few months now. Being a teacher myself I had had some reservations with the idea at first and the practicalities of it .  Let me just say that my playing has taken a huge leaps forward while studying with Steve and continues to do so.Steve studied with some renowned player/teachers such as Bergonzi and Garzone– this in itself is invaluable but Steve teaches from his own books, which cover a a vast amount of  jazz language. I must say again how much I appreciate all your material. Including the video tutorials. It help keep me focused and knowing what to aim for. And your laid back teaching style appeals to me too.

Thanks
