Description

In this lesson I introduce you to triad pair patterns that use 3 notes per triad.  Triad pair lines are based off of the concept of mixing two triads together to form your lines and ideas.   In past lessons we tackled 2×2 patterns and 4×4 triad patterns.  The more of these patterns you master the more natural and flowing your use of triad pairs will sound.

Once you master these lines and concepts you will be amazed at the way they can change your solos.  This lesson comes with a 2 page PDF with the lines written out for the C7 chord.(There is also a concert key PDF in Bb7)  I demonstrate the lines on the tenor sax as well as show you how to practice them over a play along. At the end of the video, I show you how you can practice these on a 12 bar blues also.  (31 minute Video & PDF)

Man, I just had to write to say a big thank you for this wonderful resource you have built. I’ve been playing sax for about 10 years here in sunny England. I’ve always struggled to find information that I can use to build my arsenal of licks, but moreso to give freedom and let loose. Your books and lessons have been a revelation. I just downloaded your triad 3×3 video lesson, and within minutes of watching it I was adding the ideas to some of the things I learnt from your dominant bebop book, and was just taking it to another level. An absolute joy. I’m sure I’ll get around to purchasing more, but in the mean time, thank you so much for your hard work in preparing these, and explaining/demonstrating so clearly.
Love to everyone that side of the pond.
    Jon.W. (England)

Testimonials

Steve,

I have played for many years and have enjoyed going “back to the basics” in some of your lessons!  You have such a gift for explaining concepts.  As I have gotten older, some of the basic things have gotten muddled because I just play, not knowing why.  As I refresh myself with “why”, it increases my confidence and expands my playing.  Thank you so much for using your gift!  You are a blessing!

I bought Steve’s dominant bebop book and took a couple of online lesson from him. I really appreciated Steve’s careful listening of what I wanted to get done in a lesson and his clear, concise ideas on next steps to improve my playing and musical interpretation.  His mastering  the Dominant Bebop Scale has lots of exercises to use a scale that addresses the largest percentage of chords I come across in pop/blues music. The dominant V7.  Needless say it has improved my playing.  I teach and a… Read more

Thank you for the wealth of helpful lessons you’ve provided over the years.  I truly feel as though it has improved my playing more than the 4 years I spent at Berklee… and that’s not a slight on the school as I loved my experience there.

I am enjoying your style of teaching, and you’ve done a great job with the videos….good sound quality and well constructed lessons.  Balances the more guitaristic material found on the majority of guitar based programs.  Jazz vocab is what I’m all about at this point in the journey.   I especially dig the fact that you’ve studied with Bergonzi…helps me see his voluminous output in a more  bite sized way.

Hi Steve,

First, I want to thank you for all of your great lessons. They are like a “For Dummies” version of all the books on my shelf. The lessons break things down into manageable pieces, and give me the confidence that I’m practicing the right pieces. I’m starting to make progress.   Thank You,   Kim

I want to thank you for your “Ultimate II-V-I Primer”  which has sent me off on a much better path to improvisation.  The primer and the four bound books I have will keep me busy for a long time.  I like your lessons for two reasons.  The lessons work and THEY ARE FUN.  Thanks again.

I just joined Neff Music last month. I can’t tell you how excited I’ve been to be able to pick back up on lessons. I’ve been in a rut and you got me out! I’ve especially appreciated the Lesson Path section. It was so clear I knew exactly where to jump in and start. Many many thanks!

Love your lessons!  I have been using your lesson packages for many months now, and am learning a lot.  It is so perfect for me with a very busy adult schedule and difficulty in taking jazz/improv music lessons from reputable instructors who live and hour or more away from me.

Hello Steve,
