Description

The blues scale is one of the most important scales you can learn as an improviser.  There is so much history and feeling to it that when you play a great blues lick nothing is better.

In this series of video lessons, I play through all one hundred blues licks in C# minor from my book “Mastering the Blues Scale Vol. 1” on the alto saxophone.

I have been asked by a number of members on my site if I could provide some video lessons on how I would use the blues licks in Volume 1 over a funk or smooth jazz groove.  These 5 lessons are on that type of groove.

In lesson 2, I take you through blues licks 21-40 in the book.  I demonstrate the licks to a track I composed in C# minor(for alto sax) that has a funky smooth jazz feel to it.

I demonstrate how to play the licks the way they are written and then how to change them and manipulate them to fit the funk groove of the song.

The power of these licks is realized once they are memorized and internalized.  You must play them enough that you can change them in the moment to fit the sound and feel that you want.  I demonstrate this concept for you on each lick.

To get the most out of these lessons, you will need the book “Mastering the Blues Scale Vol. 1” to follow along with the video.

I provide a play along in C# minor for alto saxophone that you can play with as well. (28 Minute Video Lesson,PDF & Play Along)

Testimonials

Hi Steve,

First, I want to thank you for all of your great lessons. They are like a “For Dummies” version of all the books on my shelf. The lessons break things down into manageable pieces, and give me the confidence that I’m practicing the right pieces. I’m starting to make progress.   Thank You,   Kim

Thank You Steve. I think that I will be busy for years. Thank You for your great contribution to jazz music. Your books, more than teaching “how to play jazz”, actually teach “how to speak jazz”. I wish I found your methods years ago.

I’ve been having ‘ online’  lessons with Steve for a few months now. Being a teacher myself I had had some reservations with the idea at first and the practicalities of it .  Let me just say that my playing has taken a huge leaps forward while studying with Steve and continues to do so.Steve studied with some renowned player/teachers such as Bergonzi and Garzone– this in itself is invaluable but Steve teaches from his own books, which cover a a vast amount of  jazz language. I have NEVER seen material like yours.  Amazing!!

I’m an experienced player in the pop/soul/funk areas of music and, previously, classical.  Over the decades I’ve been playing, I’ve always felt that I could do what I needed in those styles of music.  However, recently I began to feel limited by my use of the same old licks. When I discovered Steve Neff’s website, and heard the audio examples based on the exercises in his books, I realized they were what I needed.  I purchased all of them and have been working on them since.  It’s very hard work… Read more

Thanks so much for putting all this great learning material out there. I don’t often have the time to take a lesson with a teacher, so the ability to download lessons is really invaluable. My playing has improved enormously (I think :)) – and the lessons are so varied there’s always something to be inspired by. Incredible value too!

I would like to say that in the last year my sax playing has progressed loads from your lessons. I have had a sax for about 20 years and dabbled with lessons from a few teachers and have learnt very little from them. As you have said in your lessons many teachers tell you to use the blues scale and leave it there, not even showing you the resolution points!!. I am now believing I can in time become a good improviser.
Thanks again,
Shane

Just a brief note to compliment you on your teaching skills and in particular for the honesty of your lessons.  I am a returning alto sax player in my 50’s and I was looking for a no nonsense, straight to the point kind of guidance. I had intended to email you with a few questions regarding the use of the bis key but then I noticed that there was a lesson on that specific topic and after viewing it,  all my questions were answered. I once took a group lesson with a well known professional sax … Read more
