Description

Many times my students will ask me how I can play so fast………..I always respond “Practice”.  In this lesson I take you through some exercises that I have student work through who need to learn the chromatic scale.  I take you through each step of the exercises and show you how to practice them from the very beginning and build up speed.  I also include many tips on playing them with good technique as well as how to use the metronome with them.  It is important to really get these fundamentals of a solid technique down so that later you will have fewer weaknesses in your playing.  I talk about the best alternate fingering to use and give you some “Inside” tips on how to develop the best hand position and finger movement.  I demonstrate everything on the tenor saxophone.  This is Lesson 1 of a 2 part lesson on the chromatic scale.  Enjoy!  (Video)

I really love how Steve really cares about good habits when playing. This lesson is very important to build up technique. The importance Steve gives to following each of his tips and instructions about how to play the chromatic scale is something everybody should do in order to be a better player and master the instrument.

I thank Steve for his care about our progress and improvement. Not many (or maybe none) teachers really care about their students´ good habits, improvement and progress.

Appreciate it Steve! I will definitely do as you say and am sure I´ll feel the difference in my playing. Just as I did with the use of the side Bb key.

Testimonials

Steve, just a note to say thanks.

I’ve been playing a long time, but your material, laid out in such a thoughtful way, helps me to understand concepts in a new and deeper way.

You are a true gift to the jazz community.

60 lessons and going strong,

Kevin Ledbetter

First, I’m really excited about your materials! This site is a vast resource for any aspiring (and maybe already inspired) jazz musicians. I’m not a sax player, I play mandolin and fiddle, but have been learning jazz and playing weekly with a quintet for the past 6 months and have been struggling with all of the issues you get into in your lessons. I bought several books and lessons and plan to continue with some others as soon as I organize my practice routine. Thanks again for a great site … Read more

I want to let you know that your instructional material is transforming my playing.  It is an immense pleasure to learn and play now, and I can’t tell you how grateful I am. The instructional material I got from you is by far the best of any I own (and I have over 100 books, DVDs, and what not). I literally can’t thank you enough! Deric

Steve really changed my way of practicing: I got a whole lot of new ideas for my playing the tenor.  His lessons are really helpful, give a lot stuff to practice and give clear answers to complicated stuff.  Steve has a lot of humor and I wish I had laughed so much in my former days with the horn.  All topics, from Blues to Approach note are dealt with clearness that wet ones appetite to play and practice that great ideas.

Steve,

I have played for many years and have enjoyed going “back to the basics” in some of your lessons!  You have such a gift for explaining concepts.  As I have gotten older, some of the basic things have gotten muddled because I just play, not knowing why.  As I refresh myself with “why”, it increases my confidence and expands my playing.  Thank you so much for using your gift!  You are a blessing!

Just wanted to send you a quick note to say thank you for being you, your playing, your website and your desire to help others. I’m a professional musician in the US Army and I’ve visited your website almost every day since discovering it a couple of months ago. Your lessons are profound and easy to use. I’ve purchased most of your PDF books and now am starting to delve more into the video and audio lessons.  Thank you for being a great resource!

I am enjoying your style of teaching, and you’ve done a great job with the videos….good sound quality and well constructed lessons.  Balances the more guitaristic material found on the majority of guitar based programs.  Jazz vocab is what I’m all about at this point in the journey.   I especially dig the fact that you’ve studied with Bergonzi…helps me see his voluminous output in a more  bite sized way.

I can see from your instructional videos that you are a fantastic teacher – one that can truly relate to all ages – humble yet very positive in approach – never coming across as superior and yet so totally capable of demonstrating the principles and techniques that you seek to impart to the students. I have gained so much confidence in my playing from “pouring over” time and again these invaluable lessons. Invaluable not only in musical content, but also in human interaction content. I am absolu… Read more
