Description

Diatonic patterns are a must for any serious student of jazz.   Diatonic thirds are usually the first interval pattern that students will work on.  It is important to get these interval patterns down before attempting larger intervals like fourths, fifths and sixths.   You need to work on these thirds until you can play them in all 12 keys without even thinking about it.  The key to mastering these patterns is repetition.  Where most students fall short, is that they don’t practice these enough.  Don’t make that mistake!

Diatonic Third patterns are valuable because they give you tons of melodic material you can use,   they equip you with a thorough knowledge of the major scale and by working on them you improve your technique.   In this lesson I show you four common patterns using diatonic thirds.  I give you tips on how to best practice them and demonstrate them for you on the soprano sax with some background music.  Playing these pattern with background music is the best way to get the sound of them into your ear in each key that you work on.   This lesson also includes a 12 page pdf of the patterns in every key.  Enjoy!  (30 Minute Video Lesson)

I am a 7 year alto player. Starting to learn basic improvisation. I knew it was about time to fully master the intervals. I have practiced them before but not in a serious fashion until a couple of weeks ago. A few days ago I downloaded this lesson on 3rd’s. Steve’s advice and experience were invaluable. The top tip was playing them against the Vol 24 Aebersold backing tracks. So melodic and beautiful. You can improvise over just those simple intervals and they sound great on the particular key track you are playing with. I prefer learning them by sound rather than staring at a piece of paper. That works better for me since you do not have time to look at paper when constructing a melody. I recommend this course for any serious musician.

I want to let you know that your instructional material is transforming my playing.  It is an immense pleasure to learn and play now, and I can’t tell you how grateful I am. The instructional material I got from you is by far the best of any I own (and I have over 100 books, DVDs, and what not). I literally can’t thank you enough! Deric

Just wanted to send you a quick note to say thank you for being you, your playing, your website and your desire to help others. I’m a professional musician in the US Army and I’ve visited your website almost every day since discovering it a couple of months ago. Your lessons are profound and easy to use. I’ve purchased most of your PDF books and now am starting to delve more into the video and audio lessons.  Thank you for being a great resource!

Steve,  Just want to say thanks for all you are doing for all of us. I’ve learned more from you than anyone else in my 40 years of playing.

If you can give some tips on One Note Samba, Ceora, and Wave… that would be cool.  I really like learning how you apply your concepts to actual songs!

Have a great year,

Kevin Ledbetter

I've learned more from you than anyone else in my 40 years of playing.

Thank You Steve. I think that I will be busy for years. Thank You for your great contribution to jazz music. Your books, more than teaching “how to play jazz”, actually teach “how to speak jazz”. I wish I found your methods years ago.

Your lessons on playing the blues is so clear . I have been through many books on blues playing and not one of them explains as clear as your lessons . Most of them say “Play the same blues scale over all three chords of a 12 bar blues ” Its very misleading .     Thanks

I just wanted to write a thank you note to you for this website. I play and teach saxophone, but I have always been intimidated by the gear aspect. Your website has helped me become a lot more knowledgable. Your knowledge is staggering! I’m telling all my students about your website. Pierre

I’ve been having ‘ online’  lessons with Steve for a few months now. Being a teacher myself I had had some reservations with the idea at first and the practicalities of it .  Let me just say that my playing has taken a huge leaps forward while studying with Steve and continues to do so.Steve studied with some renowned player/teachers such as Bergonzi and Garzone– this in itself is invaluable but Steve teaches from his own books, which cover a a vast amount of  jazz language.
