In this Tune of the Week lesson, I tackle the great bossa standard The Girl from Ipanema by Antonio Carlos Jobim.

This is a great jazz standard that I have been playing since my college days when I first started gigging around Boston. It is found in most Real Books and is a beautiful melodic tune that is great to play. I play the song on the soprano saxophone with a play along I created and talk through the form of the tune.

I show you what devices and concepts I use on each chord and section of the tune and demonstrate them by playing examples of each concept. I also talk about using different pentatonics and triad pairs while improvising to add different “color” notes to your lines like the #11.
