Description

This is a beginner improviser series for tenor sax.  In this series of lessons I will take you from the very beginning and teach you how to improvise.

In this lesson 6B, I will show you how to start practicing what you know around the circle of fifths. I use Jamey Aebersolds #24 and 84 to show you how to start playing to progressions that change every 8 bars or 16 bars.  I show you how to play in phrases so that you can keep track of where you are in the progression. I give you a number of great tips and hints to help you succeed and keep from getting lost while improvising.

My goal with these series of lessons is too teach you all the basic chords and scales in every key and get you improvising in a fluent way over some common jazz standards.  I demonstrate all the material on my tenor saxophone. (Video) (31 minutes)

At the end of this lesson Steve talks about perseverance and work ethic and how through long hard practice you can become a great saxophonist. I would put myself in the same category as Steve, who also in the beginning having no ‘natural’ talent, I am now actually seeing the results from hard practice and practicing the right things. These lessons are the material you need to be on the right road to becoming a jazz player, and if you feel at times that others around you just have it all while you struggle, keep going, it all starts to happen in time. So far I have purchased possibly more than 100 of Steve’s lessons and haven’t come across one where I haven’t learned something new or have been disappointed. Every lesson for me is packed with great tips and golden nuggets of information. Thanks Steve.
