Description

There is nothing cooler than having your approach notes mastered!  Back about 10 years ago, I had decided that I really needed to get my act together and start practicing again.  I decided to pick one main focus and to practice like crazy.  The area of jazz improvisation I picked was Approach Note patterns.   I wrote out every conceivable approach note pattern I could think of in the key  of C and started practicing.  Soon I found myself totally freed up and liberated from playing my old cliche lines and patterns.  I was playing new lines and ideas and my technique was better than ever……..

Out of that experience came my “Approach Note Velocity” books.  As I started giving online video lessons, I started receiving requests to do some lessons on this approach note concept.   This is a new series that I’m starting to teach how to work through the “Approach Note Velocity” material.  In this series I will take you step by step through the process in each lesson.   I have found that many students enjoy how the approach note concept sounds but when it comes to applying it to their playing it can be difficult.  This  will be a step by step lesson series where I walk you through the process of how to learn and integrate these concept into your own playing.  In order to get the most out of this series you will need the “Approach Note Velocity” books, Jamey Aebersold Vol. 24 “Major and Minor”and  Jamey Aebersold Vol. 21 “Getting it Together”.

In this series, I have 13 30-45 minute long lessons teaching you how to best work with the approach note concept.  The series is ongoing but these 13 lessons will give you a great start with tips on how to work on the materials in the books.

In order to get the most out of these lessons you should  already have a good grasp of your scales and chord tones in all keys and have my “Approach Note Velocity Volume 1 & 2 books.  If you master the material within these lessons and books, you will find a freedom and dexterity throughout all 12 keys that you never had before.  (13 30-45 Minute Video Lessons)

Testimonials

Steve,  Just want to say thanks for all you are doing for all of us. I’ve learned more from you than anyone else in my 40 years of playing.

If you can give some tips on One Note Samba, Ceora, and Wave… that would be cool.  I really like learning how you apply your concepts to actual songs!

Have a great year,

Kevin Ledbetter

I've learned more from you than anyone else in my 40 years of playing.
Steve- I joined your site this month and have downloaded 4 lessons and also purchased your new book and video on diatonic patterns. I just want to say I am very pleased with your approach and teaching techniques. I am getting back into playing after laying off for some time. The information you offer on your site is of great value and I am enjoying being a member. Thank you for what you are doing for the saxophone community.
Tony

After reading your story I will never feel quite right about complaining about any of my MINOR health issues!!    God bless Steve and I really hope that your health doesn’t stop you from fulfilling your calling.    These books have been such a help to open up my jazz vocabulary…   Thanks so much for sharing your story and for providing these great teaching tools…   John Leclerc   Saxophonist / composer/ EWI player and professional working musician of 35 years….

Hello Steve, I’m getting so much out of your lessons and books, amazing how much one may think one knows, there is always a new frontier or new way to view something you think you had somewhat down. You have taken it all to a new level and am so grateful. Your lessons are so down to earth and understandable and clear!  Thanks so much Steve! Cheers, Eddie

First, I’m really excited about your materials! This site is a vast resource for any aspiring (and maybe already inspired) jazz musicians. I’m not a sax player, I play mandolin and fiddle, but have been learning jazz and playing weekly with a quintet for the past 6 months and have been struggling with all of the issues you get into in your lessons. I bought several books and lessons and plan to continue with some others as soon as I organize my practice routine. Thanks again for a great site … Read more

I want to thank you for your “Ultimate II-V-I Primer”  which has sent me off on a much better path to improvisation.  The primer and the four bound books I have will keep me busy for a long time.  I like your lessons for two reasons.  The lessons work and THEY ARE FUN.  Thanks again.

Steve,

I have played for many years and have enjoyed going “back to the basics” in some of your lessons!  You have such a gift for explaining concepts.  As I have gotten older, some of the basic things have gotten muddled because I just play, not knowing why.  As I refresh myself with “why”, it increases my confidence and expands my playing.  Thank you so much for using your gift!  You are a blessing!

I just joined Neff Music last month. I can’t tell you how excited I’ve been to be able to pick back up on lessons. I’ve been in a rut and you got me out! I’ve especially appreciated the Lesson Path section. It was so clear I knew exactly where to jump in and start. Many many thanks!

Steve really changed my way of practicing: I got a whole lot of new ideas for my playing the tenor.  His lessons are really helpful, give a lot stuff to practice and give clear answers to complicated stuff.  Steve has a lot of humor and I wish I had laughed so much in my former days with the horn.  All topics, from Blues to Approach note are dealt with clearness that wet ones appetite to play and practice that great ideas.
