Description

I have been asked many times to do some more video lessons on the altered scale and sound.   The altered scale is one of the hippest and more modern sounds out there.  It is derived from the melodic minor scale and most modern players use it quite often on dominant chords.  By using the altered scale you create lines that use all the altered tensions of a dominant chord.  The b9,#9,3,#11,b13 and b7.  This gives the line or idea an “outside” sound.  A sound with a lot of tension and dissonance.  This type of  tension sounds terrific when it is used by an improviser that can control it.  The trick is to resolve it correctly.

In Altered Dominant Substitutions-Lesson 1, I teach you how to play an altered scale sound on the V7 of a ii-V-I progression by focusing on a small segment of the altered scale and creating lines with these notes.  By focusing on a smaller selection of altered notes, you will find that you will come up with totally different and unique lines than you normally would using the altered scale as a whole.  The other side benefit of this technique, is that this concept is fairly easy to put into practice immediately and you will find yourself creating more melodic lines based on these altered segments.  This is a terrific lesson series to get into if you want to get away from your average stale ii-V-I ideas and play with a more modern hipper sound. The series of Altered Dominant Substitution lessons I found very helpful. This is a much easier way of implementing the altered scale.

Thanks Steve again for all the great lessons.

I have NEVER seen material like yours.  Amazing!!

I want to let you know that your instructional material is transforming my playing.  It is an immense pleasure to learn and play now, and I can’t tell you how grateful I am. The instructional material I got from you is by far the best of any I own (and I have over 100 books, DVDs, and what not). I literally can’t thank you enough! Deric

Love your lessons!  I have been using your lesson packages for many months now, and am learning a lot.  It is so perfect for me with a very busy adult schedule and difficulty in taking jazz/improv music lessons from reputable instructors who live and hour or more away from me.

Hi Steve, I can’t express just how much I appreciate your teaching. My playing has improved so much over the past year since I have been studying and practicing with your lessons. It is possible to teach an old dog new tricks, these lessons are proof! Thanks, Michael Byington

Hello Steve, I’m getting so much out of your lessons and books, amazing how much one may think one knows, there is always a new frontier or new way to view something you think you had somewhat down. You have taken it all to a new level and am so grateful. Your lessons are so down to earth and understandable and clear!  Thanks so much Steve! Cheers, Eddie

I am enjoying your style of teaching, and you’ve done a great job with the videos….good sound quality and well constructed lessons.  Balances the more guitaristic material found on the majority of guitar based programs.  Jazz vocab is what I’m all about at this point in the journey.  I especially dig the fact that you’ve studied with Bergonzi…helps me see his voluminous output in a more bite sized way.

Your material is great! I got your New Altissimo Lesson 6 months ago and I have learned more from that than in all my 44 years of playing! I appreciate your down to earth teaching method and I really appreciate the heart that you teach with. I have been a subscriber to your lessons for the past 6 months and I have learned a great deal. Over that period of time I have had some questions and you have never failed to respond. Thanks! I have already recommended your lessons to a number of players in… Read more

Steve,

I have played for many years and have enjoyed going “back to the basics” in some of your lessons!  You have such a gift for explaining concepts.  As I have gotten older, some of the basic things have gotten muddled because I just play, not knowing why.  As I refresh myself with “why”, it increases my confidence and expands my playing.  Thank you so much for using your gift!  You are a blessing!

Julia

Hello Steve,

I just want to say thank you so much for your unbelievable work, it is just mind opening, thanks for sharing it.

Hi Steve, I live in a gorgeous but rural area of Oregon-no music store within 80 miles. Your lessons are my lifeline!  Truly the best there are anywhere online. Love your playing. Love your teaching.  Thanks again. Ed
