{"id":82475,"date":"2020-12-08T09:59:12","date_gmt":"2020-12-08T14:59:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.neffmusic.com\/blog\/?p=82475"},"modified":"2022-11-15T14:55:40","modified_gmt":"2022-11-15T19:55:40","slug":"gottsu-sepia-tone-vi-marble-alto-saxophone-mouthpiece-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.neffmusic.com\/blog\/2020\/12\/gottsu-sepia-tone-vi-marble-alto-saxophone-mouthpiece-review\/","title":{"rendered":"Gottsu Sepia Tone VI Marble Alto Saxophone Mouthpiece Review"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">If you like the sound of Paul Desmond, this review is for you.\u00a0 Today, I am reviewing a hard rubber alto saxophone mouthpiece from Gottsu mouthpieces in Japan.\u00a0 I had received some emails from a few different fans of my site who were impressed with the Gottsu sax mouthpieces they had played and I decided to reach out to the Gottsu company and see if I could review some of their mouthpieces.\u00a0 In response, they sent me a beautiful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.neffmusic.com\/blog\/2019\/08\/gottsu-sepia-tone-jazz-metal-tenor-saxophone-mouthpiece-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gottsu Sepia Tone Jazz Metal Tenor saxophone mouthpiece<\/a> to review which I loved!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Gottsu recently sent me two more saxophone mouthpieces to review.\u00a0 They are the hard rubber <a href=\"https:\/\/www.neffmusic.com\/blog\/2020\/10\/gottsu-sepia-tone-vi-marble-tenor-saxophone-mouthpiece-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gottsu Sepia Tone VI Marble tenor<\/a> mouthpiece that I already reviewed and a Gottsu Sepia Tone VI alto saxophone mouthpieces that I am reviewing today.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.neffmusic.com\/2019\/GottsuVIAltoTop.jpg\" rel=\"shadowbox\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 0px initial initial;\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.neffmusic.com\/2019\/GottsuVIAltoTop.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"350\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Gottsu Sepia Tone VI Marble Alto Saxophone Mouthpiece<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The Gottsu Sepia Tone VI marble alto saxophone mouthpiece I received is beautiful as you can see in the photos.\u00a0 It is made of hard rubber with a colored marble design to it.\u00a0 It is a 7 tip opening which according to the tip opening chart on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gottsu-japan.com\/home-english\/products-en\/sepia-tone-vi-en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gottsu mouthpiece website<\/a> is a .075 tip opening.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The Gottsu VI alto sax mouthpiece really is a work of art.\u00a0 The craftsmanship looks amazing.\u00a0 The saxophone mouthpiece has\u00a0 &#8220;Gottsu VI&#8221; engraved on the top and &#8220;Sepia Tone&#8221; engraved on the gold band of the shank. Japan is engraved on the bottom of the gold band and the tip opening of 7 is engraved on the right side of the mouthpiece as you look at the table.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.neffmusic.com\/2019\/GottsuVIAltoBaffle.jpg\" rel=\"shadowbox\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 0px initial initial;\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.neffmusic.com\/2019\/GottsuVIAltoBaffle.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"350\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Gottsu Sepia Tone VI Marble Alto Saxophone Mouthpiece<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The table, tip rail, side rails and baffle of the mouthpiece look great to the eye.\u00a0\u00a0The tip rail looks thin, even and balanced.\u00a0 \u00a0The tip rail lines up with the shape of the saxophone reed tip nicely.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The baffle is a rollover baffle that is a medium-low baffle height.\u00a0 The baffle looks pretty flat between the tip and the rollover. After the rollover, the baffle has a scooped side to side curve to it that looks to follow the whole length of the baffle until it terminates at the end of the mouthpiece chamber similar to how the baffle looked in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.neffmusic.com\/blog\/2019\/08\/gottsu-sepia-tone-jazz-metal-tenor-saxophone-mouthpiece-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gottsu metal jazz mouthpiece review<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The chamber looks a little smaller in size than a hard rubber Meyer chamber.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t have a Meyer alto mouthpiece here to compare but it does seem smaller to me as I look at it.\u00a0 I would describe the chamber size as between medium and small.\u00a0 The chamber looks to be the same size as the bore of the mouthpiece.<\/p>\n<p>The inside of the side rails look and feel pretty straight to me.\u00a0 There is a smooth transition where they meet the chamber and expand slightly to round out the chamber.\u00a0 The roof of the mouthpiece chamber is not thin but has a bit of thickness to it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.neffmusic.com\/2019\/GottsuVIAltoBaffle2.jpg\" rel=\"shadowbox\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 0px initial initial;\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.neffmusic.com\/2019\/GottsuVIAltoBaffle2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"350\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Gottsu Sepia Tone VI Marble Alto Saxophone Mouthpiece<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The Gottsu Sepia Tone VI marble alto sax mouthpiece is similar in size and diameter to a typical hard rubber Meyer alto saxophone mouthpiece and I used a Vandoren Optimum ligature that I use on hard rubber Meyer mouthpieces on the Gottsu VI marble alto saxophone mouthpiece.\u00a0 \u00a0The beak profile also feels very comfortable and similar in shape to the beak profile on a hard rubber Meyer alto saxophone mouthpiece.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.neffmusic.com\/2019\/GottsuVIAltoTable.jpg\" rel=\"shadowbox\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 0px initial initial;\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.neffmusic.com\/2019\/GottsuVIAltoTable.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"350\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Gottsu Sepia Tone VI Marble Alto Saxophone Mouthpiece<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Here is a quote from the Gottsu mouthpiece website on the Sepia Tone VI marble alto saxophone mouthpiece:<\/p>\n<div id=\"text-3496-0-0-2\" class=\"module module-text text-3496-0-0-2 title03 \">\n<h3 class=\"module-title\"><em>Sepia Tone VI Marble<\/em><\/h3>\n<p><em>Baritone \/ Tenor \/ Alto\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Mellow, deep and dynamic sounds<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-3496-0-0-3\" class=\"module module-text text-3496-0-0-3 \">\n<p><em>The VI mouthpiece is made by a jazz man for jazz lovers.\u00a0 This mouthpiece is made from the same ebonite used in the making of the Gottsu Sepia Tone line.\u00a0 The defining feature of the VI mouthpiece is a vintage jazz sound.\u00a0 But unlike the Gottsu Sepia Jazz Metal, the VI fits larger in the mouth and offers a more mellow tone.\u00a0 One of the most important things for any musician is to search for one\u2019s own sound, and though this process may take many years, the VI mouthpiece will continue to work well every step of the way.\u00a0 I promise that this work of art will give you immense joy.\u00a0 Please enjoy discovering the diverse possibilities of music.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"themify_builder_row themify_builder_3496_row module_row module_row_3 clearfix gutter-default\" data-gutter=\"gutter-default\" data-equal-column-height=\"\">\n<div class=\"row_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"row_inner\">\n<div class=\"col-full first tb-column tb_3496_column module_column_0 module_column\">\n<div class=\"tb-column-inner\">\n<div id=\"text-3496-3-0-1\" class=\"module module-text text-3496-3-0-1 title01 \">\n<h3 class=\"module-title\"><em>Gottsu Original Technology\u3000+R<\/em><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"themify_builder_sub_row clearfix gutter-default sub_row_3-0-2\">\n<div class=\"col4-2 first sub_column sub_column_3-0-2-0 sub_column_post_3496\">\n<div id=\"text-3496-sub_row_3-0-2-0-0\" class=\"module module-text text-3496-sub_row_3-0-2-0-0 \">\n<p><em>+R (advanced process) is the most advanced G-Tune technology for processing the tip rail for a more efficient reed vibration. The word &#8220;Desmondish&#8221; is obviously referring to Paul Desmond who had one of the most beautiful light signature alto saxophone tones of all time. (Listen to Take Five by Paul Desmond and Dave Brubeck as an example).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The intonation on the Gottsu Sepia Tone VI alto saxophone mouthpiece was excellent.\u00a0 The mouthpiece articulated well also and was smooth and even throughout the range of the horn.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.neffmusic.com\/2019\/GottsuVIAltoTip.jpg\" rel=\"shadowbox\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 0px initial initial;\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.neffmusic.com\/2019\/GottsuVIAltoTip.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"350\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Gottsu Sepia Tone VI Marble Alto Saxophone Mouthpiece<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I have provided one sound clip below of me playing the Gottsu Sepia Tone VI alto saxophone mouthpiece with a Lupifaro Evo #3 alto sax reed.\u00a0 I try to play in a few different styles and using a variety of lines throughout the range of the horn.<\/p>\n<p>I did feel like the strength of the Gottsu VI alto sax mouthpiece in leaning towards that &#8220;Desmondish&#8221; sound concept could also be considered a weakness if you don&#8217;t prefer that sound.\u00a0 In my opinion, this is a great mouthpiece if that is the sound you want but I wouldn&#8217;t classify it as a versatile mouthpiece with a wide range of tones.
