{"id":6710,"date":"2013-01-08T20:45:23","date_gmt":"2013-01-09T01:45:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.neffmusic.com\/blog\/?p=6710"},"modified":"2014-01-16T14:27:14","modified_gmt":"2014-01-16T19:27:14","slug":"drake-pete-christieb-tenor-mouthpiece","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.neffmusic.com\/blog\/2013\/01\/drake-pete-christieb-tenor-mouthpiece\/","title":{"rendered":"Drake Pete Christieb Tenor Mouthpiece"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is a new hard rubber tenor saxophone mouthpiece by Aaron Drake.\u00a0 Aaron has started a new series of mouthpieces called the &#8220;Masters&#8221; series\u00a0 where he copies the favorite mouthpieces of the great players alive today.\u00a0 So far, he has made mouthpieces for Dave Liebman, Jerry Bergonzi and Pete Christlieb.<\/p>\n<p>I have been a fan of Pete Christlieb&#8217;s since around 8th grade.\u00a0 That was the year that my parents took me out to California on vacation.\u00a0 They happened to take me to the &#8220;Tonight Show&#8221; with Johnny Carson\u00a0 and that\u00a0 was the first time I heard Christlieb play.\u00a0 I was just getting into the saxophone at that time but I still knew this guy was smokin&#8221;.\u00a0\u00a0 Later at Ithaca college, Pete Christlieb was the guest artist one semester.\u00a0 I got to play in the big band behind him and I remember being in awe of how much this guy could swing. (I still have that concert on cassette tape but haven&#8217;t listened to it since that day because I don&#8217;t have a cassette player anymore&#8230;&#8230;)<\/p>\n<p>I remember at that time learning that he played on an old Berg Larsen.\u00a0\u00a0 He had a huge sound.\u00a0 It filled up the room and was big and powerful.\u00a0 I remember thinking at the time, that I had never heard a tenor player be as expressive as Mr. Christlieb was.\u00a0\u00a0 He was scooping and bending notes all over the place&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;..\u00a0 (It was around this time that I bought my first tenor saxophone&#8230;&#8230;..I had only played alto until this time)<\/p>\n<p>When I heard that Drake mouthpieces was making a copy of Pete Christlieb&#8217;s mouthpiece I wanted to try one immediately&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/public.neffmusic.com\/DPCTop.jpg\" rel=\"shadowbox\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 0px initial initial;\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/public.neffmusic.com\/DPCTop.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"280\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Drake Pete Christieb Tenor Mouthpiece<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This is what the Drake website says about the Christlieb model:<\/p>\n<p><b>Pete Christlieb MASTER SERIES <\/b><span style=\"color: #6f6f6f;\"><b>Tenor Mouthpiece<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This model is based on the very same &#8220;Bullet Chamber&#8221; design that Pete Christlieb has played for over 50 years.\u00a0 The specially calibrated baffle is contoured to create an &#8220;aliveness&#8221; to the sound that is even through all the registers.\u00a0 The addition of the long silver plated banding on the shank helps to focus the core vibrational frequencies and generates greater projection.<\/p>\n<p><b>\u201cFor a guy who has played on the same mouthpiece for 54 years, my new Aaron Drake recreation is incredibly accurate. \u00a0The .120\u201d is my favorite.\u201d<\/b><br \/>\n<i> &#8211; Pete Christlieb<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/public.neffmusic.com\/DPCTable.jpg\" rel=\"shadowbox\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/public.neffmusic.com\/DPCTable.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"280\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Drake Pete Christieb Tenor Mouthpiece<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The mouthpiece looks great. The baffle is a medium height Berg type baffle with the scooped bullet chamber in it.\u00a0 The mouthpiece has a thinner profile to it than I am used to, but it&#8217;s easy to get used to it.\u00a0 It is a very lightweight mouthpiece.\u00a0 The silver banding on it gives it a little bit more weight but I think if it didn&#8217;t have that it would blow away in the wind&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;\u00a0 The bite plate area has a bit of a duckbill shape to it.\u00a0 I imagine that Mr. Christlieb&#8217;s original Berg has a shape similar to this one.\u00a0 The rails, tip, table and baffle all look perfect.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/public.neffmusic.com\/DPCBaffle.jpg\" rel=\"shadowbox\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 0px initial initial;\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/public.neffmusic.com\/DPCBaffle.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"280\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Drake Pete Christieb Tenor Mouthpiece<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The Drake Pete Christlieb mouthpiece played great from the get go.\u00a0 It has a similar vibe and feel to it as some other great Berg&#8217;s I have played through the years.\u00a0 It is very powerful and the scooped out baffle gives it a thick hearty tone that really carries.\u00a0 You can hear in the beginning of the recording how thick it sounds.\u00a0\u00a0 It also has loads of power when you push it.\u00a0 At times during the recording I found myself &#8220;growling&#8221; and going for more of a blues tenor sound.\u00a0 The mouthpiece was very smooth and even from note to note and was easy and smooth to play fast on.\u00a0 The last phrase of the clip was about as fast as I&#8217;ve ever heard myself play&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;The altissimo was very easy to get in comparison to many other &#8220;Link&#8221; type pieces.\u00a0 It was fun to play up there on this mouthpiece.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/public.neffmusic.com\/DPCTip.jpg\" rel=\"shadowbox\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 0px initial initial;\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/public.neffmusic.com\/DPCTip.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"280\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Drake Pete Christieb Tenor Mouthpiece<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0If you like the Drake Pete Christlieb sound you can check them out on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.drakemouthpieces.com\/Masters_Series.html\" target=\"_blank\">Drake website<\/a> for more information.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Let me know what you think in the comments below.
