{"id":50914,"date":"2018-04-24T14:36:20","date_gmt":"2018-04-24T18:36:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.neffmusic.com\/blog\/?p=50914"},"modified":"2021-11-23T13:43:41","modified_gmt":"2021-11-23T18:43:41","slug":"pete-christlieb-swingin-tenor-sax-solo-transcription-limehouse-blues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.neffmusic.com\/blog\/2018\/04\/pete-christlieb-swingin-tenor-sax-solo-transcription-limehouse-blues\/","title":{"rendered":"Pete Christlieb Swingin&#8217; Tenor Sax Solo Transcription-&#8220;Limehouse Blues&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">For todays transcription, I need to give you a little bit backstory so bear with me for a second.\u00a0 I started playing the saxophone in 7th grade.\u00a0 I was your average kid who was excited about playing the sax but not really sure how serious I was or where this new hobby would take me.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In 8th grade (&#8217;80-&#8217;81 sometime),\u00a0 my parents took our family of five to California for a family vacation.\u00a0 It was my first time on a plane and our first and I believe only &#8220;family vacation&#8221; where we went out of New York State.\u00a0 My parents were huge fans of Johnny Carson and the Tonight Show and they got tickets for us to go one night.\u00a0 I was so excited to see a show that was on TV even though I no idea what the &#8220;Tonight Show&#8221; was.\u00a0 \u00a0I wish I could tell you who the guest was or some of the jokes Johnny Carson told that night, but I can&#8217;t.\u00a0 What I can remember, was the band sounded amazing and a man playing incredible tenor sax solos multiple times that night.\u00a0 I had no idea what he was playing, but man, did he sound good!\u00a0 I left that night on cloud nine thinking that I needed to really start practicing my sax more.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.neffmusic.com\/2018\/ChristliebTonight.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-21884\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.neffmusic.com\/2018\/ChristliebTonight.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"275\" height=\"275\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Pete Christlieb on the Tonight Show<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I found out that that sax players name was Pete Christlieb.\u00a0 Coincidently enough, five years later during my first year at Ithaca College, the guest artist with the jazz band was&#8230;&#8230;. you guessed it,\u00a0 Pete Christlieb!!!\u00a0 I was ecstatic!<\/p>\n<p>Again, I wish I could tell you details about that Ithaca jazz band concert.\u00a0 What tunes we played and what solos I took as a freshmen college student, but alas, I don&#8217;t remember any of that stuff.\u00a0 What I remember is again being floored by Pete Christlieb&#8217;s playing.\u00a0 I remember specifically thinking that Pete Christlieb had the biggest, &#8220;bluesiest&#8221;,\u00a0 most expressive tenor saxophone sound I had ever heard in my life.\u00a0 He played multiple tunes that night with all sorts of chord changes and every single solo somehow seemed to sound like a blues solo to me.\u00a0 Mr. Christlieb would be rippin&#8217; through the changes and then it seemed like during every solo he would smoothly transition to this bluesy wailin&#8217; sax solo.\u00a0 I remember being amazed by this!\u00a0 &#8220;How is he sounding so bluesy and soulful over all these hard chord changes??&#8221; I asked myself.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">When I first heard the tune I transcribed for you today, it brought me right back to those two experiences with Pete Christlieb from my past.\u00a0 The tune is &#8220;Limehouse Blues&#8221; from the Pete Christlieb CD &#8220;Pete Christlieb with the Lori Mechem Quartet Live at the Jazz Cave&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This Limehouse Blues is not your typical barnburner that you typically hear when this tune is played.\u00a0 \u00a0This is a slow, bluesy, gutsy tenor sax swingin&#8217; version that I immediately fell in love with.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t think I will ever play Limehouse Blues fast again after hearing this version.\u00a0 That is how much I love it!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Pete Christlieb just tears this tune up!\u00a0 He &#8220;bluesifies&#8221; the tar out of this solo. Scooped notes galore!\u00a0 \u00a0So many in fact, that at times I had trouble figuring out what note he was actually playing.\u00a0 At times, it almost seemed like Mr. Christlieb&#8217;s tenor sax had a slide on it.\u00a0 His tone is thick, full, husky and robust.\u00a0 The kind of tone that would make me walk into a blues bar if I was walking by and heard it!<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.neffmusic.com\/2018\/Christlieb.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-21884\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.neffmusic.com\/2018\/Christlieb.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"275\" height=\"275\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Pete Christlieb-Tenor Saxophone<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There is a lot to take note of in this solo:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I love Pete Christlieb&#8217;s use of triplets throughout the solo<\/li>\n<li>I love how far he lays back at times.\u00a0 This made some rhythms incredibly hard to figure out but it just sounds sooooooo good!<\/li>\n<li>I mentioned the scoops and bends earlier.\u00a0 Now I&#8217;m mentioning them again, I love them.\u00a0 So expressive&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;..<\/li>\n<li>I love Mr. Christlieb&#8217;s choice of notes. The 9th in measure 14. That held 13 in measure 23. The held 9th in measure 35.
