{"id":4926,"date":"2011-09-21T22:18:35","date_gmt":"2011-09-22T03:18:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.neffmusic.com\/blog\/?p=4926"},"modified":"2014-01-16T14:58:50","modified_gmt":"2014-01-16T19:58:50","slug":"saxz-vintage-1950-alto-saxophone-mouthpiece","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.neffmusic.com\/blog\/2011\/09\/saxz-vintage-1950-alto-saxophone-mouthpiece\/","title":{"rendered":"SAXZ  &#8220;Vintage 1950&#8221; Alto Saxophone Mouthpiece"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This is a SaxZ &#8220;Vintage 1950&#8221; hard rubber alto saxophone mouthpiece.\u00a0 SaxZ is a company in Japan which is run by Mitsu Watanabe.\u00a0 I reviewed a SAXZ Dave Sanborn model which was a very modern sounding mouthpiece about a month ago.\u00a0 This alto saxophone mouthpiece is SAXZ&#8217;s version of a vintage 1950 type mouthpiece.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/public.neffmusic.com\/SAXZVintage.jpg\" rel=\"shadowbox\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 0px initial initial;\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/public.neffmusic.com\/SAXZVintage.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"280\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>SAXZ\u00a0 &#8220;Vintage 1950&#8221; Alto Saxophone Mouthpiece<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This mouthpiece looks great.\u00a0 The tip and rails were even and well cut.\u00a0 The baffle was a rollover baffle that declines smoothly into a medium size chamber.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/public.neffmusic.com\/SAXZVintageBaffle.jpg\" rel=\"shadowbox\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 0px initial initial;\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/public.neffmusic.com\/SAXZVintageBaffle.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"280\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I&#8217;m not sure how much of a 1950&#8217;s vibe that I felt with this mouthpiece.\u00a0 It was\u00a0 a very powerful, full and bright sounding mouthpiece.\u00a0 The intonation was good and it was very easy to play throughout the range of the horn.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Here are some words about the mouthpiece from Sax-ccessories site that sells them.:<\/p>\n<div id=\"slide_p\">\n<p><em>&#8220;The Saxz Vintage 1950 alto sax mouthpiece has a husky and dark sound with a lot of buzz like a 1950&#8217;s sound. This mouthpiece has very quick response and all the playability and very good pitch that you find in today&#8217;s mouthpieces. This is a mouthpiece that offers outstanding performance.\u00a0It features a low baffle with medium large chamber. It has a hand-finished\u00a0body, tip, and side rails.&#8221; <\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/public.neffmusic.com\/SAXZVintageChamber.jpg\" rel=\"shadowbox\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 0px initial initial;\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/public.neffmusic.com\/SAXZVintageChamber.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"280\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>SAXZ\u00a0 &#8220;Vintage 1950&#8221; Alto Saxophone Mouthpiece<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">You can hear the brightness and edge in the sound in the audio clip below.\u00a0 For me,\u00a0 it had more of a modern sound although, when I think 1950&#8217;s alto players I guess the names that come to mind are Paul Desmond, Phil Woods, Sonny Stitt, Bud Shank, Art Pepper and Charlie Parker,\u00a0 I think most of those guys were probably in there twenties or thirties during the 50&#8217;s.\u00a0 When I think of those players sounds I do think of a brighter alto sound so I can see where this could have a 50&#8217;s vibe to it.\u00a0 It certainly could be a great lead alto mouthpiece because of the brightness and power it has.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/public.neffmusic.com\/SAXZVintageChamber2.jpg\" rel=\"shadowbox\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/public.neffmusic.com\/SAXZVintageChamber2.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"280\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Let me know what you think in the comments below.
