{"id":16218,"date":"2014-03-12T11:39:11","date_gmt":"2014-03-12T16:39:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.neffmusic.com\/blog\/?p=16218"},"modified":"2014-03-12T11:39:55","modified_gmt":"2014-03-12T16:39:55","slug":"morgan-fry-ebonite-alto-saxophone-mouthpiece","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.neffmusic.com\/blog\/2014\/03\/morgan-fry-ebonite-alto-saxophone-mouthpiece\/","title":{"rendered":"Morgan Fry Ebonite Alto Saxophone Mouthpiece"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Today, I am excited to review a new mouthpiece made by Morgan Fry.\u00a0 Morgan Fry is a great mouthpiece maker and refacer in England.\u00a0 I have reviewed some of his mouthpieces in the past and had him do some refacing work for me and have always been impressed with his work and craftsmanship.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 If you do a search for Morgan Fry in the &#8220;search&#8221; bar on the top right of the site you can find some of his other mouthpieces I have reviewed.\u00a0 The mouthpiece I am reviewing today is the ebonite\u00a0 6M alto saxophone model.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/public.neffmusic.com\/MFEboniteAltoTop.jpg\" rel=\"shadowbox\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 0px initial initial;\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/public.neffmusic.com\/MFEboniteAltoTop.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"280\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"0\" \/><\/a><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Morgan Fry Ebonite Alto Mouthpiece<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The outside of the Morgan Fry Ebonite mouthpiece is very cool looking.\u00a0 It has a black and gold marble look to it with a beautiful silver band around the shank.\u00a0 MF is engraved in white on the top of the mouthpiece and 6M is stenciled in on the bottom of the table.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The rails of the mouthpiece look to be very even and the tip rail is symmetric and perfect looking to the eye.\u00a0 The baffle is what I would call a medium high baffle (between a medium and high baffle).\u00a0 It has straight side walls that scoop out to a medium sized chamber.\u00a0 The chamber looks very close in size to a Meyer medium chamber as I compare them side by side.\u00a0 As the baffle slopes down into the chamber it is not straight but has more of scooped shape as you can see in the pictures below.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/public.neffmusic.com\/MFEboniteAltoTable.jpg\" rel=\"shadowbox\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 0px initial initial;\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/public.neffmusic.com\/MFEboniteAltoTable.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"280\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Morgan Fry Ebonite Alto Mouthpiece<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The Morgan Fry Ebonite alto mouthpiece was very easy to play and was extremely reed friendly.\u00a0 I used a Rigotti Gold 2 1\/2 strong reed with a Vandoren Optimum ligature on the clip below.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/public.neffmusic.com\/MFEboniteAltoBaffle.jpg\" rel=\"shadowbox\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 0px initial initial;\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/public.neffmusic.com\/MFEboniteAltoBaffle.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"280\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Morgan Fry Ebonite Alto Mouthpiece<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I found this alto mouthpiece to have a brighter focused tone.\u00a0\u00a0 I found the tone reminded me of a brighter &#8220;Art Pepperish&#8221; kind of tone.\u00a0 Art&#8217;s tone was I think a little darker but there is something about the quality of the tone\u00a0 that reminded me of him.\u00a0\u00a0 This mouthpiece would be a &#8220;killer&#8221; bebop sounding piece.\u00a0\u00a0 It was very smooth and even through the range of the horn and it was easy to manipulate the tone and bend notes.\u00a0 I found that the response of this mouthpiece was immediate and allowed me to really express myself fully.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">If you are looking for a brighter more cutting sound than a typical Meyer type mouthpiece, this would be a great choice.\u00a0 I could get loads of volume out of this piece and the intonation was excellent.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/public.neffmusic.com\/MFEboniteAltoChamber.jpg\" rel=\"shadowbox\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 0px initial initial;\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/public.neffmusic.com\/MFEboniteAltoChamber.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"280\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Morgan Fry Ebonite Alto Mouthpiece<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The Morgan Fry Ebonite Alto Mouthpiece was great to play. I have had it for about a month and it hasn&#8217;t left my horn the whole time.\u00a0 If you like the sound of the clip below and the mouthpiece catches your interest then give it a try.
