{"id":13854,"date":"2013-12-24T00:18:53","date_gmt":"2013-12-24T05:18:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.neffmusic.com\/blog\/?p=13854"},"modified":"2013-12-27T14:33:01","modified_gmt":"2013-12-27T19:33:01","slug":"joel-frahm-jazz-improvisation-clinic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.neffmusic.com\/blog\/2013\/12\/joel-frahm-jazz-improvisation-clinic\/","title":{"rendered":"Joel Frahm Jazz Improvisation Clinic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I emailed <a href=\"http:\/\/joelfrahm.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Joel Frahm<\/a> the other day and asked if I could post this great masterclass he did in Prague years ago.\u00a0 He said &#8220;No problem&#8221; which I was very excited about.\u00a0 I have been a great fan of his going back many years.\u00a0\u00a0 I went through a stage where I was listening to a lot of Brad Mehldau and one day saw a Duo recording with Brad and Joel Frahm.\u00a0 I bought it and loved it.\u00a0 Since that day I have bought all of Joel&#8217;s recordings as a leader including Don&#8217;t Explain, Sorry No Decaf, The Navigator, We Used to Dance,\u00a0 and many more with him as a sideman&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.neffmusic.com\/siteimages\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Frahm.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-13856 aligncenter\" alt=\"Frahm\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.neffmusic.com\/siteimages\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Frahm.jpg\" width=\"161\" height=\"188\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.neffmusic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Frahm.jpg 161w, https:\/\/www.neffmusic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Frahm-128x150.jpg 128w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 161px) 100vw, 161px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Joel Frahm Jazz Improvisation Clinic<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0Here is a short history about him from Joel&#8217;s website:<\/p>\n<p id=\"line1\"><span><span id=\"line38\"><\/span> &#8220;<span id=\"line39\"><\/span><em>Joel Frahm&#8217;s May 1st release, We Used to Dance, places him in the company of master musicians Kenny Barron (piano), Rufus Reid (bass), and Victor Lewis (drums).\u00a0 Frahm more than holds his own in showing both the chops and lyricism that has made him an irreplaceable part of so many sessions in his two decades on the jazz scene.<span class=\"entity\"> \u00a0<\/span> <span id=\"line40\"><\/span> <span id=\"line41\"><\/span>Surrounded by jazz legends, Frahm makes this recording a true \u201ccoming out party\u201d for his maturing artistry. It is his most ambitious CD to date,\u00a0 featuring six of his original compositions that come to life in beautiful and variegated ways in the hands of this remarkable band. \u201cIt was an honor and a watershed experience to make this record with these incredible musicians\u201d he says. <span id=\"line42\"><\/span>Having made a name for himself through his associations with singer Jane Monheit and boyhood friend,\u00a0 pianist Brad Mehldau,\u00a0 Frahm hones his own voice on this breakout recording. Joel has also worked with a vast array of musical peers and jazz legends including Maynard Ferguson, Betty Carter, Matt Wilson, Larry Goldings, Dewey Redman, Lee Konitz, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Andrew Hill, Ben Allison, Pat Martino, Ingrid Jensen, Dena Derose, The Village Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Kyle Eastwood and many others. <span id=\"line43\"><\/span>Born in Racine, WI in 1969, Frahm attended the Mason Gross School for the Arts and earned his B.A. in Jazz Performance at Manhattan School of Music. He released three highly regarded CDs on Palmetto: The Navigator, Don&#8217;t Explain (with Mehldau), and Sorry No Decaf. Don\u2019t Explain, his latest, was the number one jazz release for radio play in the United States for two consecutive weeks in 2004, according to jazzweek.com airplay chart and also reached number one on college radio for one week, according to College Music Journal\u2019s airplay chart.\u00a0 Joel was also recently selected in DownBeat Magazine\u2019s Critics Poll as a Rising Star in the category of tenor saxophone.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This masterclass is on playing melodically and creating a story with your soloing.\u00a0 Joel offers many great conceptual tips and demonstrates by playing a great solo on &#8220;My One and Only Love&#8221;.\u00a0 His tone is just gorgeous!!\u00a0 Dark, round and full.\u00a0 Listen for the melodic phrases he uses when he starts his solo.\u00a0 Try to hear how the phrases lead and connect to each other.\u00a0 Listen for the tensions and releases\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">After the solo,\u00a0 Joel starts out by talking about playing in 10th&#8217;s which is totally cool!
