{"id":12718,"date":"2013-11-01T11:14:22","date_gmt":"2013-11-01T16:14:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.neffmusic.com\/blog\/?p=12718"},"modified":"2021-11-23T16:24:55","modified_gmt":"2021-11-23T21:24:55","slug":"blue-bossa-bob-mintzer-solo-transcription","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.neffmusic.com\/blog\/2013\/11\/blue-bossa-bob-mintzer-solo-transcription\/","title":{"rendered":"Blue Bossa Bob Mintzer Solo Transcription"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Bob Mintzer has been one of my favorite tenor saxophone players for as long as I can remember.\u00a0 Around 1986 or so I remember he came to Ithaca College in NY to play with our big band.\u00a0 We worked up a number of Bob Mintzer big band charts and Bob played great during that concert and was such a humble and nice guy to meet.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.neffmusic.com\/siteimages\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Mintzer.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12719 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.neffmusic.com\/siteimages\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Mintzer.jpg\" alt=\"Mintzer\" width=\"192\" height=\"183\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.neffmusic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Mintzer.jpg 192w, https:\/\/www.neffmusic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Mintzer-150x142.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 192px) 100vw, 192px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Since that time I have bought so many recordings of Bob and I have loved his playing and concept through the years.\u00a0 Bob is the perfect fusing of advanced harmonic concepts , time and melody.\u00a0 Not to mention that I have always loved his tenor saxophone tone and phrasing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">A few months ago,\u00a0 I was browsing around Youtube when I saw a video for Bob Mintzer called Blue Bossa.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t have any recordings of Bob playing this standard tune so I was curious what it was a clip of.\u00a0 I thought perhaps it was a &#8220;live&#8221; gig video tape or maybe a masterclass. I clicked on the link and discovered the recording was from a Mintzer\u00a0 album that I never heard of called &#8220;Bop Boy&#8221;.\u00a0 Somehow,\u00a0 I had missed this CD release&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s the clip from Youtube. (Hopefully, it will remain up so that you can listen to it in the future)<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tPhIFbfww0Y\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I decided to transcribe Bob&#8217;s solo on this tune but like many things I have intentions to do, it got put in a pile of papers on my desk.\u00a0\u00a0 Earlier this week, I was cleaning my desk area and found the manuscript paper with the start of the solo.\u00a0 I got a sudden surge of adrenalin and decided to finish the transcription.\u00a0 A couple of hours later and a few cups of coffee and I was done.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">i thought I would share this transcription with all of you as I consider this to be a great solo!\u00a0 There are many rhythmic, harmonic and melodic ideas used that are worthy of imitation.\u00a0 I believe most of the transcription is accurate or close to it but I will say that the first bar on the sixth line of the first page almost gave me a nervous breakdown.\u00a0 I&#8217;m still not sure if that bar is right but I can&#8217;t tell you how many times I rewound that section and found myself yelling at my computer in frustration. ( If you happen to discover any inaccuracies\u00a0 feel free to let me know)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">One cool change that I noticed in this recording from the typical changes used is that in the second bar of the tune there is a major 3rd present in the chord.
