Here is a fairly new Phil Barone \u00a0tenor saxophone mouthpiece. \u00a0This is the “Hollywood” model and is an 8 (.110) tip opening. \u00a0I believe this is a 2009 model although there is no date on it ( his older mouthpieces had dates engraved on the side of them). \u00a0I have owned 5-6 Barone mouthpieces over the years and I was very curious to try these new models that Phil is making. \u00a0As you can see from the pictures of the baffle this has what looks like a shelf type baffle in it that made me think it would be very bright and loud. \u00a0It wasn’t though………….<\/p>\n

I was surprised when I first played this mouthpiece. \u00a0I thought that it would be really bright and loud from the looks of the baffle but in reality it had a medium volume and was more on the midway line between dark and bright. \u00a0The one thing I found about this mouthpiece was that it had a lot more resistance than other Hollywoods I have played in the past. \u00a0I like a little bit of resistance when I play but this had a bit too much for my preference. \u00a0I was also trying a Barone “Jazz” model when I was trying this mouthpiece and I \u00a0really liked that one much more. \u00a0It had less resistance and I could get more volume out of it. \u00a0While I was playing, I felt like I was getting more of an airy and smokey vibe to the sound. \u00a0The interesting thing is that the person who sent me the \u00a0Barone mouthpieces told me that they liked the Hollywood the best. \u00a0That goes to show you that each person has their own preferences for what they like or don’t like. \u00a0I have to say though, please don’t take this review as the bottom line description of all Hollywood mouthpieces. \u00a0I have played many over the years and there was a lot of variety in how much resistance each mouthpiece had. \u00a0Some of the Hollywoods I have played in the past were more free blowing, louder and brighter. \u00a0Some were darker and fatter. \u00a0Some were more resistant like this one. \u00a0Phil works on each mouthpiece by hand and many times customizes the mouthpiece for the needs of the player buying it. \u00a0 Phil’s website is www.PhilBarone.com if you want to read more about his mouthpieces…………Enjoy!<\/p>\n
