In this lesson I explore the concept of "Voicing" or shaping the notes on the saxophone. Learning to voice the notes will open up so many different avenues to all levels of saxophone player. From the beginner wanting a firm foundation in tone production on the saxophone, to the blues player wanting to learn how to bend and shape notes like a great vocalist, to the intermediate student struggling to grasp playing in the altissimo range, mastering this concept is a must if you want to take your playing to the next level. I show you how to shape your tongue and throat to change the air stream and demonstrate simple exercises you can do to master this elusive concept. Using simple exercises that are easy too understand and can be practiced almost anywhere, I show you how you can learn to control your sound by using small changes in the position of your throat and tongue. Using a combination of vocal sounds and simple mental images, I demonstrate how you too can learn to achieve the command necessary to play the extreme ranges of the saxophone without drastic changes to your embouchure or biting. I also discuss why mastery of this concept is so important to being able to play the different registers of the saxophone in tune. I demonstrate why proper voicing of the note is essential to obtaining the altissimo register and how practicing these voicing exercises will help your studies in this area too. These simple exercises will soon have you playing the whole saxophone from top to bottom with an assurance you never thought possible. This lesson makes a great companion study to my lessons on "Developing a Great Saxophone Sound" and "Saxophone Intonation."
