Theo Wanne Hard Rubber Gaia Tenor Saxophone Mouthpiece
Here’s another Theo Wanne tenor saxophone mouthpiece for you to check out. This is a hard rubber version of the Gaia tenor saxophone mouthpiece. The Gaia is said to be a run at the florida link type concept. It has a medium baffle that does indeed remind me of my florida links. The difference hear is in the chamber. The Gaia looks to have a much larger chamber than the florida links I have owned. It looks closer in size to my NY links. This mouthpiece is a .110 tip opening (8). I found this to be one of the nicest darker mouthpieces I have tried. It had a nice fat dark sound that was lush sounding. The edges of the tone seemed to have a rounded quality to them. I noticed this with the metal Gaia I tried also.

Theo Wanne Wood Gaia Tenor Saxophone Mouthpiece
Here’s another Theo Wanne tenor saxophone mouthpiece for you to check out. I just received a ton of these and I’m working my way through them as you might have noticed. This is a wood version of the Gaia tenor saxophone mouthpiece. The Gaia is said to be a run at the florida link type concept. It has a medium baffle that does indeed remind me of my florida links. The difference hear is in the chamber. The Gaia looks to have a much larger chamber than the florida links I have owned. It looks closer in size to my NY links. This mouthpiece is a .110 tip opening. I was hoping for a .105 tip as that is what I liked the best when I tried the metal Gaia out. This tip feels a little larger than I normally like but it was still easy to play.

Theo Wanne Ambika Tenor Saxophone Mouthpiece
Here’s another Theo Wanne tenor saxophone mouthpiece for you to check out. I just received a ton of these and I’m working my way through them as you might have noticed. This is a hard rubber version of the Ambika mouthpiece. The Ambika is on the darker side of the tone spectrum. It has a lower baffle than the Gaia. This is a .110 tip opening. I was hoping for a .105 tip as that is what I liked the best when I tried the metal Gaia out. This tip feels a little larger than I normally like……………………….

Theo Wanne Wood Gaia Alto Saxophone Mouthpiece
Here’s another Theo Wanne alto saxophone mouthpiece for you to check out. I just received a ton of these and I’m working my way through them as you might have noticed. This is a wood version of the Gaia mouthpiece. The Gaia is a middle of the road type mouthpiece tone wise. From bright to darker you have the Durga,Kali,Amma and then the Gaia. I noticed a big difference between the HR Gaia and the wood model. The wood mouthpiece seemed to vibrate more. I could actually feel it vibrating as I played………………………

Theo Wanne Hard Rubber Kali Alto Saxophone Mouthpiece
Here’s another Theo Wanne alto saxophone mouthpiece for you to check out. I just received a ton of these and I’m working my way through them. This is a hard rubber Kali mouthpiece. It is an 8 tip opening which is around a .080 I believe. This is similar to the metal Kali mouthpiece I reviewed earlier. Even though the design looks the same as the metal Kali there is a difference in the sound of the mouthpiece in my opinion. Some people believe material makes no difference what so ever but I tend to believe that the hard rubber softens the tone just slightly over the metal Kali………………………

Theo Wanne Gold Kali Alto Mouthpiece
Here’s another Theo Wanne alto mouthpiece for you to check out. I just received a ton of these and I’m working my way through them. This is a brushed gold Kali mouthpiece. It is an 8 tip opening which is around a .080 I believe. This is similar to the Durga mouthpiece I reviewed earlier but the baffle has a smooth rollover to it where the Durga has an edge at the end of the first stage of the baffle. I believe the smoothness of that edge take away some of the brightness found in the Durga. You can click on the photos to see them closer……………………..

Theo Wanne Gold Durga Alto Saxophone Mouthpiece
This is a Theo Wanne gold Durga alto saxophone mouthpiece. This has a higher and longer baffle than the other Theo Wanne mouthpieces I have played. The baffle looks to be in two stages. The first stage is high and looks to be about half an inch long. At that point there is a ledge and another baffle with a steeper decline. This secondary baffle has a rounded edge on it that drops into the chamber. This is the brightest of the Wanne alto mouthpieces I have tried. I think it’s also the prettiest. I just love looking at this piece. It is gold but has silver on the band, biteplate and ligature. It looks amazing. If you click on the pictures below they will expand so you can see more detail.

Theo Wanne HR Amma Alto Saxophone Mouthpiece
This is a Theo Wanne hard rubber Amma alto saxophone mouthpiece. Theo was kind enough to send me a big box of mouthpieces to try out and I spent all morning playing and recording them. This Amma is an .080 tip opening and is made out of hard rubber. The Amma has a slightly higher and longer roll over baffle than the Gaia mouthpiece I reviewed earlier. The longer and higher baffle will tend to give a mouthpiece a brighter, more powerful and more focused sound. If you compare this clip to the Gaia clip, you should be able to hear a difference in the sound from the Gaia. Later I will put up clips of a few Kali and Durga mouthpieces that have even higher baffles in them.

Theo Wanne HR Gaia Alto Saxophone Mouthpiece
This is a Theo Wanne hard rubber Gaia alto saxophone mouthpiece. Theo was kind enough to send me a big box of mouthpieces to try out and I spent all morning playing and recording them. I already put up a clip of a Gaia 6 alto mouthpiece a couple of weeks ago. This one is an .080 tip opening which is a bit bigger than the 6 I have. The bigger tip opening darkened up the sound just a tad from the 6 tip and also gave it a slightly bigger rounder sound to my ears. If you listen to this sound clip and then go back and listen to the 6 you should be able to hear the difference in sound.

MacSax Empyreal Alto Saxophone
Today, I’m reviewing the MacSax Empyreal Alto Saxophone. This sax is manufactured in Taiwan for the MacSax company in Austin Texas. This is the Unlacquered Finish model. It looks like bare brass which gives it a cool vintage look. I am told that the brass is subjected to a gas treatment that gives it a stable and uniform color. The Empyreal Alto comes with a Theo Wanne hard rubber Gaia mouthpiece as well as a Theo Wanne ”Enlightened” ligature. I used all of these for the sound clip below. I’ve had this horn for a couple weeks now and I am very impressed with it. From the first moment I played it, I knew it was a great horn! It’s one of those horns that resonate under your fingers when you play so you can feel the vibrations of the sound. I love that!
