In this lesson I talk about how to growl when playing the sax. I have so many students that ask me how to do this……It’s a simple technique but can be hard to start doing if you have never done it before. I give you some tips on how to put growling into practice and talk about some of the problems students encounter when trying it for the first time. I demonstrate on my tenor sax. (Video & Audio)

    This was another great lesson. I have been trying to growl for years but my attempts were tearing up my throat and the sound was way out of control. After this lesson, I finally ‘got it’ after only a few minutes of trying. As Steve says, it’s like altissimo, it seems impossible until it just clicks at some point and then you have it forever. Now I finally understand how those big sound R&B players get that gritty edge to their tone. I am excited to start working this technique in to my sound. Now that I have the fundamental trick down, I devote about ten minutes of my daily practice session to refining and controlling it, hence the ‘art’ of growling. Steve’s sense of humor makes this lesson fun too, he was cracking me up.
