I was first introduced to this concept years ago. A hemiola is a repeated pattern played over a constant pulse that sets up a polyrhythm. In this lesson I talk about the concept of playing a simple rhythm in 3 over a tune with a 4/4 time signature. This is a concept that I use sparingly now in my playing but that can setup some very interesting lines that will break you away from your cliche licks and finger patterns. I give you examples of 6 patterns to work with and show you how to use them over "All the Things You Are. I play the alto saxophone on this recording.(Audio & Video)
